Sadness and anger have once again gripped our hearts and minds today. We received the remains of 32 Yazidis brutally executed by the Islamic State in 2014, in Sinjar. Among them women, children, adults, and the elders. 32 families are shattered. These were more than just numbers, at least to us, since the world is more interested in helping our abusers, the perpetrators of these crimes. They were fathers, mothers, brothers, and grandparents, each with dreams, stories, and loved ones left behind to grieve an unbearable loss. Those who have recognized the Islamic state genocide against the Yazidis are now sitting at the same table with those responsible for these horrors. Meanwhile, 2,800 Yazidi women and children are still missing, held captive by those they are negotiating with. Half of the Yazidi population remains displaced, and many mass graves continue to be left unaccounted for and untouched. The world’s hypocrisy has emboldened terrorist groups, giving them greater confidence in their actions. For the first time in decades, we see that the families of ISIS perpetrators are being cared for more than the victims. In some cases, the atrocities they committed have been overlooked, and they are now being recognized as heads of state. Today, the Yazidis stand alone, while witnessing a troubling rise in ISIS activities, fueled by the support of their followers on social media, who continue to threaten Yazidis on a daily basis. Fortunately, our history has taught us that every attempt to eradicate us only strengthens us. Our losses have always fueled our resilience, empowering us to fight back with unwavering pride, never bowing down or submitting to anyone. We stand strong, united, until the very last of us. Let those who threatens and think today’s Yazidis are the same as before the genocide be mistaken no more, it’s a dangerous miscalculation. In Sinjar, nearly 25,000 armed Yazidis stand, each carrying the pain of lost loved ones, driven by an unyielding need for justice. If justice is not properly served, when the time is right, these men will be left with no choice but to seek vengeance against the neighboring Sunni Arabs who were complicit in the mass killings and enslavement of Yazidi women. Let us also not forget the Iraqi Kurds who paved the way for ISIS to carry out this genocide against the Yazidis. We will not forget that you, the Iraqi Kurds, disarmed the Yazidis of their light weapons when they begged to be armed. We will not forget how, for months, you promised absolute protection to the Yazidis, only to abandon them without a fight in the middle of the night while families slept. We will not forget that you blocked the roads to safety. Those responsible for these betrayals will pay a heavy price whether it is today or tomorrow.
