Incredible… the story is actually not a parody. just had confirmed live on BBC Breakfast, from here in Davos, that yes, President Trump sent THAT note to the Norwegian PM saying that because they hadn’t given the Nobel Peace Prize, he could now justify owning Greenland.

WATCH: UK’s most important new factory - opening next year: Tonight as part of my UK GDP report ive been to Somerset Agratas factory which from next year will be manufacturing made in Britain EV batteries that will enable JLR exports to the EU and US… Absolutely fascinating:

🔥 Latest from Davos: for BBC News (UK) - US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in a church tells Europe to keep the faith over the US President and “Don’t Panic” over Greenland but acknowledges Trump’s “threats” to allies - US investor tells me that Trump is trying to do a giant “real estate deal” to grow the physical landmass of the US bigger than Canada by acquiring Greenland - a joke, I assume, - top Trump first term adviser and tech titan tells me “Greenland will stay Greenland” and invading it is “on the edge” after private talks with Congressional figures and US business elite here last night. - Extraordinary and surreal

NEW As a Chinese made car hits number 1 in UK, and so far this year 15% of UK registrations have been made in China brands (about 1.3% only 5 years ago) I visited possibly the most important new factory in the UK - the facility that will provide Electric Vehicle batteries for JLR from next year, run by its sister company Agratas in Somerset. Cells from raw materials, made in the UK. Govt just confirmed £380m of funding, Peter Kyle tells me there it is exactly the sort of development needed for resilience and to avoid reliance in Chinese battery supply chains… At the same time he says that Britain “should not fear” this rise of China, that there are parallels with Japan’s car export surge in the 1990s and he’d “absolutely welcome” investment in UK factories from China… he suggests that right now this is the focus, after his two visits to China. Partly this surge in the UK is a result of the UK not levying extra tariffs unlike the EU and US… Canada rowed back on some of these tariffs (subject to quota) after Carney visited.

“Very serious”… “at least we know where the Strait of Hormuz is” Genuine concern here at IMF meetings among finance ministers and bankers about the consequences of the release of the super powerful Mythos AI mode by Anthropic on banking system security… my latest featuring, canadian finance minister François-Philippe Champagne (FPC) 🇨🇦 Barclays CEO CS Venkatakrishnan, and Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey who raised it with me unprompted:

Live from Davos🚨 Quite the moment for the world, & how the world is run Donald Trump may want to enter Davos like a new sheriff with new rules for the world, his own rules, perhaps no rules. But there are signs here the rest of the world is now on alert, ready to push back.

NEW “We want that pattern to end” Rachel Reeves says of the historic trend of top UK science and inventions only being commercialised in the US/ Silicon Valley, as the Government invests £2bn in quantum computing ahead of her Mais lecture on long term growth for the UK economy… The Chancellor spoke to me for BBC Breakfast and BBC News (UK) at the National Quantum Computing Centre in Oxford ahead of her Mais Lecture at Bayes Business School this afternoon setting out what she called long term “big choices” in the economy, making the UK the fastest adopter of AI in the G7, alignment with EU in multiple sectors and regional growth corridors Oxford-Cambridge (canary wharf style development powers for Oxford) and northern cities… All this against a backdrop of clouds from global crisis again re growth and living standards…

Never seen such a disconnect between the economists who track where rates go, and the market assumptions… Another City economist predicting the next move is DOWN later this year… market implied expectations of 2-3 RAISES this year (4 yesterday morning) … clearly this is impacting mortgage market. From the Governor’s interview on Thursday it seemed clear to me that “hold” meant “hold” and he specifically said “There is no question in my mind, that the best and most appropriate solution to this problem is not monetary policy, is to reopen the Strait of Hormuz,”

NEW Spoke to French finance minister & current G7 chair Roland Lescure here at the IMF “Going to take a while to reopen the Strait of Hormuz” Iran using the world economy as a weapon high gas prices from Iran war now hitting the US UK and France will work together to reopen Strait, after peace deal, starting with summit on Friday. He also said he was an Anglophile, regretted Brexit, and France would be “flexible” on renegotiation but “no free lunch”….

That in turn was prompted by a very interesting Big Boss Interview with Tom Beahon the CEO of British sports marque Castore, Manchester-based who raved about Manchester as a place to start a business, built on access to a destination for talent, and the role of Mayor Burnham, within that, which I haven’t really got into in the piece, because that’s a separate issue, and it’s clear the strategy has been in place since the late 1990s with Bernstein/ Leese/ Sir Bob Scott’s Olympic bid. But it is interesting to hear a business leader talking in these terms about anywhere in the UK… it’s almost a different language of optimism and positivity… it is quite different from the debate in what might be called the Westminster bubble
