The 6'3" Gwendoline Christie (Brienne) has stated that the most gruelling scene she ever had to play in the series was in season four's episode The Children (2014), when she fought sword-to-sword with 6'6" Rory McCann (Sandor "the Hound" Clegane). She spent two months training three to four days a week with swordmaster C.C. Smiff just to build up the required stamina for her fight scene.

The show presents the fight as if Brienne simply outmatches Jaime. The book does the opposite. While fighting him, Brienne realizes she is facing a ruined version of Jaime Lannister: starved, chained, weak, and exhausted, and yet he is still overwhelming to deal with. She internally admits that if Jaime had his full strength, he would have destroyed her. That’s what makes the scene so important. Brienne enters the duel seeing Jaime as the dishonorable “Kingslayer,” but leaves understanding why the entire realm feared and respected him as a swordsman. The book really displays Brienne’s growing realisation that she only survived because Jaime was broken.
