Adam Neumann on keeping Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest: “About 10 years ago, I started keeping Shabbat.” And Shabbat in tech has become a bit of a trend. We’ve hosted Shabbats, and I’ve seen dozens of founders hosting beautiful Shabbat dinners of their own. It’s beautiful. But let’s take it up a notch. Adam’s challenge to everyone: “Make it the day that’s true for you. Take your phone away for 24 hours and put it in a place that you genuinely are not going to touch it. Give it to a friend if you can’t trust yourself.” That’s the challenge. 24 hours. No phone. No distractions. Just Shabbat. Let’s see how many founders take him up on it.

A Hasidic Jew was passing through border security when the officer began asking him the usual questions. Before leaving, he asked the officer one question of his own: “Are you Jewish?” “Yes,” the officer replied. “Would you like to put on tefillin?” The officer hesitated for a moment… then said yes. Minutes later, they were wrapping tefillin together. A beautiful reminder that you don’t have to be Chabad, or even religious, to help another Jew connect with G-d. Sometimes all it takes is asking one simple question.

Just got back to my hotel in Tel Aviv after spending Shabbat in Jerusalem. As I walked in, I saw eight teenagers standing outside with their phones out, waiting to get a selfie with Clavicular. So I figured—while they’re waiting, why not ask if they’d like to do a mitzvah and wrap tefillin? One by one, every single one of them said yes. A few told me they hadn’t wrapped tefillin in a very long time and were genuinely happy to have the opportunity.
