Thousands of North Korean IT workers are infiltrating companies across the world, generating millions of dollars for the North Korean regime and gaining access to sensitive corporate networks. Posing as legitimate remote employees, they use stolen identities, earn salaries from unwitting companies, exploit their access to steal data, and funnel their earnings back to North Korea. The scheme relies on a network of facilitators – including Americans – who are paid to appear on camera, participate in job interviews, verify fraudulent identities, and keep employment-related devices connected to the internet at personal residences. U.S. companies should recognize the scale and persistence of the threat and review our updated FBI PSA for mitigation guidance:

Today, we’re announcing the FBI’s new Cyber Strategy, our roadmap for defending the American people and the nation’s critical infrastructure in cyberspace. It focuses on four pillars: disrupting adversaries, supporting victims, strengthening partnerships, and building the capabilities this mission demands. Together, these four pillars bring the full weight of the FBI to defend the homeland in cyberspace and secure America’s digital future. The #cyber threat is moving at speed and scale. The front lines increasingly run through American businesses and critical infrastructure, so this strategy is not about the FBI alone. To American industry and allies around the world: We need your partnership in this fight.

Today, the FBI is announcing Operation Riptide, an ongoing, coordinated law enforcement campaign targeting cybercriminal actors and the key services they rely on—their infrastructure, their tools and services, their communications platforms, and their money. Operation Riptide is a collective effort that implements the priorities set out in Executive Order 14390 and the National Cyber Strategy. In recent weeks, the FBI carried out a broad range of enforcement actions against cyber threat actors, serving search warrants, securing indictments, arresting suspects, and dismantling criminal infrastructure. This marks the beginning of a focused, sustained 60-day national effort. Cybercrime carries real-world consequences, and the FBI remains committed to disrupting malicious cyber activity and holding cybercriminals accountable.

The FBI’s #cyber mission gives us a perspective few others have. Today, we are launching Operation Winter SHIELD to put that perspective into action—sharing the top 10 controls organizations can implement to defend against cyber criminals and nation-state hackers. Each week, we’ll spotlight key defenses, such as phish-resistant authentication and managing third-party risk, and connect them to real #FBI cases. Our goal? To defend the homeland, help you build resilience, and drive measurable progress across industry, government, and critical infrastructure. Watch the announcement video and learn more about building your resilience:
