The Greatest Texas Tech Football Player To Wear The Number 5 Patrick Mahomes This was a tough one because I had to choose between two of the all-time greats in Texas Tech history: Michael Crabtree and Patrick Mahomes. I told myself going into this series that I wasn’t going to take the easy way out and have ties, so unfortunately, one of these Red Raider legends had to come up short. Crabtree’s Texas Tech résumé is incredible. He won the Biletnikoff Award twice, became a two-time All-American, and finished his career with 231 catches for 3,127 yards and 41 touchdowns. He was the centerpiece of one of the greatest stretches in Texas Tech football history, including the unforgettable 2008 win over No. 1 Texas. If we’re judging strictly on what a player accomplished in the scarlet and black, Crabtree has an extremely strong case. But I’m going with Patrick Mahomes. His Texas Tech career was spectacular, finishing with 11,252 passing yards, 93 passing touchdowns and 12,097 total yards. Then he went on to become a two-time NFL MVP, three-time Super Bowl champion and three-time Super Bowl MVP. What really pushes him over the top for me, though, is that his connection to Texas Tech didn’t end when he left Lubbock. Mahomes has continued to be one of the university’s greatest ambassadors, including a $5 million donation to Texas Tech Athletics and having facilities named in his honor. Unfortunately, there was one thing Mahomes couldn't do at Texas Tech: play defense. And lord knows if Texas Tech had fielded even a mediocre defense instead of a bad defense, Mahomes might have had an even better record in Lubbock. But when you're talking about the greatest No. 5 in Texas Tech history, I'm giving the crown to Patrick Mahomes. Two legends, two incredible careers, but I promised there wouldn't be any ties — and Mahomes gets the nod.

The Greatest Texas Tech Football Player To Wear The Number 3 Dwayne Slay Dwayne Slay was one of Texas Tech’s most dominant defensive players of the mid-2000s. As a senior in 2005, he exploded onto the national scene with 114 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, a sack, an interception and a Big 12-record eight forced fumbles. His performance earned him First-Team All-Big 12 honors and Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, along with First-Team All-American recognition. Slay was known for his physical, hard-hitting style and played a major role in several key Texas Tech victories. His 2005 season remains one of the best individual defensive campaigns in Red Raider history.

The Greatest Texas Tech Football Player To Wear The Number 19 Taurean Henderson Taurean Henderson was one of the most versatile and productive players in Texas Tech football history, starring as a running back from 2002–05 under head coach Mike Leach. In his four-year career, Henderson rushed for 3,241 yards and 50 touchdowns on 587 carries, while adding 303 receptions for 2,058 yards and 19 receiving touchdowns. Altogether, he accumulated 5,299 yards from scrimmage and 69 total touchdowns, averaging 6.0 yards every time he touched the ball. Henderson's career was filled with records. He finished with 414 points, still one of the most prolific scoring totals in Texas Tech history, and his 69 touchdowns were a school record. He caught a pass in 51 consecutive games, establishing an NCAA record, and his 302 career receptions as a running back were also an NCAA record at the time. He became the first player in Big 12 history to rush for more than 2,000 yards and record more than 1,500 receiving yards during his career. His individual accomplishments included First-Team All-Big 12 honors in 2005, All-Big 12 recognition in 2004, and Big 12 Coaches honorable mention in 2003. As a freshman in 2002, he set NCAA and Texas Tech freshman records with 98 receptions, 633 receiving yards and 1,453 all-purpose yards. In 2005, he scored 22 touchdowns, tying Byron Morris' Texas Tech single-season record, and was selected as the team's Most Valuable Player. Henderson finished his career as one of the defining all-purpose weapons of the early Mike Leach era.
