Scottie Scheffler played with Bryson DeChambeau yesterday and he reacted to the rules dispute at The Open: “I was out practising. I was playing with him yesterday. I don't really have a ton to say on it. Actually, I do have a ton to say. I haven't decided exactly what I want to say publicly yet. “I do have some thoughts. I just -- I don't really feel like now is the time or place for me to comment. We're in the middle of a tournament, and I'm focused on what I need to do. I need to go out tomorrow and shoot a low round. I'm not really going to expand on it too much.” He was then asked if he will speak publicly in a few weeks: “I don't know. It's just a tough situation, I think. Like I said, I have a decent amount of thoughts, but probably nothing that I'm concerned with right now. “Yeah, just feel like it's not a road I want to go down today. I have a tournament to focus on, and I'm going to go hit a few balls and hit a few putts. It's my job to go out there and shoot a low round tomorrow. Jon Rahm spoke about whether the rules dispute at The Open may energise Bryson DeChambeau, and referenced the personal issues Bryson had earlier on this year when he was emotional after winning in South Africa: “There are some players that do really well when they have some, let's say some extra going on off the course. Some of his better performances this year in Singapore and South Africa, he had -- and I don't know the extent of it -- quite a bit going on off of course, quite a bit. “Some of those things, one of them -- I think it was more than one, but one of them that I learned, I wouldn't wish on anybody, and he was able to perform incredibly well with a lot of added extra, let's say, noise and distraction. “It's a lot easier to do in a regular event rather than an Open Championship when he thought he was going to go to sleep one shot back and finds himself three shots back. “He seems to be doing just fine. Rory McIlroy just went off on one about Bryson DeChambeau’s ruling saga last night at The Open, calling him “performative” and said there’s “no doubt that he improved the line of his backswing.” Rory also said he’s “not particularly fond of him” and he thinks Bryson tried to hold “the tournament hostage”.

The on course commentator on Sky said she’d never seen a ball that far offline after Scottie Scheffler pulled it on 17 and it was “behind” the hospitality. The R&A rules officials then gave him free relief from hospitality even though they couldn’t find his ball. He made birdie.

Max Homa says he doesn’t agree with the ruling on Bryson DeChambeau yesterday and says he knows Bryson would “never cheat the game of golf”: “I'm not really, I guess, wanting to be able to decide on fair, because they're the rules officials. I only saw one angle, and in my opinion I didn't agree with the ruling. I know there's another angle that -- side on, it's always hard to tell if it improves anything. “All I know is I've known Bryson for a very long time, and he's an interesting human at times, but I know he would never cheat the game of golf. I don't really love how it happened. It's not that the R&A said that he did it intentionally, but that rule as a professional golfer feels like it's written inherently to protect against people trying to improve their lie. So I just hope that people don't have that -- that doesn't create a narrative because I don't believe that of him. “But again, I'm not going to sit here -- it's really hard to tell anything. So yeah, that one is not up for me to judge. But it's a shame how that ruling feels because it seems like -- we were talking about it this morning. It's like you would try to call somebody out in junior golf because you could tell they were stomping around the ball. It didn't look like that to me. But that's not up to me. I just don't think that's in his character, so it's a shame I think that's kind of how it's being portrayed to some.” The Open

Xander Schauffele says Bryson DeChambeau was just “stepping in how you’d normally step into a golf shot” when he was penalised at The Open yesterday: “It's a tough one. Who knows. I have no idea, to be honest. I'm assuming you talk to Bryson -- I haven't spoken to him or heard what he said, but he's just stepping in how you'd normally step in to hit a golf shot. I think the R&A said something along the lines of whether it's intentional or not, it's still a penalty. “It's a tough spot to be, obviously, when you're in high brush, kind of having to dance around to get to your golf ball is a tricky thing. It's not something we're used to doing that often. You imagine you give him the benefit of the doubt; he said he didn't do it intentionally, and it's unfortunate that he got penalized because he was playing incredibly well and obviously he's still playing incredibly well, so he's obviously going to have something to prove these next two days.” Xander Schauffele The Open

Scottie Scheffler says they didn’t find his ball on 17 and he actually asked people to stop searching for it: “The rules official said it landed just barely left of the grandstand thing. I don't know what you call that, like a sponsor area or something. And Teddy had a beat right on where it was coming down. So when we get up there, it's past the fence that marks the TIO, so he said anything that's in there is it part of the TIO. So then we said -- we tried to figure it out. I said, if I find it, does that help me; can I drop it -- since that would be about 50 yards closer to the hole. He said, yes, you can then use that spot, but you might have to go to the other side of the TIO, which I didn't know exactly where that would be, and that's not a great angle coming across there. “So decided to stop the search and go back and drop it doing point-of-entry TIO relief. Actually I did that once this year during the Byron as well. Not something I'm proud of but I was familiar with.” He went on to say: “I stopped them. They had guys pointing from up there, like it landed right here, and I just kind of hauled up there, and I was like, guys, get out of there, stop, do not find the ball. Fortunately it was my security guy that I've had for a few years here. His name is Brucey. And then Woody was up there as well. So both those guys are pretty -- I know them quite well, so when I said, please don't look for the ball, they got out of there.” The Open

The BMW Championship set a record tournament attendance for a Thursday yesterday of 27k at Bellerive, with huge crowds again today. Rory McIlroy was asked about how good the fans were after his round of 69 today to currently sit in T8: “Yeah, they're amazing. As I said yesterday, that's one of the biggest things I remember from being here in 2018 for the PGA was just how many people showed up and what a great atmosphere it was to play in. Yeah, yesterday was amazing for a Thursday. Today, teeing off at 9:45 on a Friday morning and the people out there was incredible. Russell Henley had a great back and forth with a reporter about Bryson DeChambeau’s ruling at The Open yesterday: “Well, I think it's tough. Every shot is so important. It's tough in the moment to take it no matter. But I would rather know that I did something wrong and be penalized for it than -- I'd like to know. It's unfortunate, but I think everybody should be held accountable for the same rules. “The issue with that to me is the fact that he's on TV every shot. If I played that hole yesterday, you might not have seen -- and I did the same thing, maybe they don't penalize me because maybe they don't see me do it. Rory McIlroy was asked ahead of the FedEx St Jude who he’d would vote for Player of the Year if he had to vote today: “Oh, geez, it's a hard one because I think right now it's objectively there's no one that really stands out, but subjectively it depends what you value. “So if you value winning the biggest tournaments, you would say it could be Cameron Young and Wyndham Clark in terms of one won THE PLAYERS, one won the U.S. Open. Obviously Matt Fitzpatrick has had a great year. Scottie's had an unbelievably consistent year without the wins that he's had the last couple years. “Again, it all depends on what you value, I guess. I guess I value like the bigger tournaments and guys having the bigger moments. Scottie Scheffler was asked ahead of the BMW Championship his thoughts on the new changes coming on the PGA Tour and whether he’d like to see any of the LIV players back. On the incoming changes, he said: “Getting the best players competing against each other more often is what we want as players. I assume, you guys in the media, that’s what you’d want to see. I assume that’s what the fans want as well and I think that’s the direction that we’re heading. “Making things a bit simpler in terms of who’s going to be at what tournament at what time. Golf has always been a difficult game to rank when you’re not playing head to head, and so getting the best players playing head to head more often than not in a proper tournament is, I think, the best way to do things.” He then was asked whether he’d like to see the PGA Tour offering LIV Golf players the same opportunity to return that was given to Brooks Koepka earlier this year: “Yeah, I think, when we talk about the best players, LIV has a few players that are really good. I think, the depth that we have on our tour is unmatched, but when you look at higher levels of LIV Golf there are definitely players that would provide a value to the tour and guys that I love competing against as well. “So I think going forwards there obviously has to be some kind of penalties. What they are, I’ll let Rolapp and all those guys figure it out. We have great leadership within the tour now. “But I think having those guys coming back and competing, whatever happens with LIV, whether those guys want to leave, you’ve got to ask them. But for me being able to compete against the best players in the world, there’s definitely some guys that can compete out here and I look forward to the chance of being able to compete with them more often.” PGA TOUR BMW Championship

Rory McIlroy was asked after The Open whether he’d like to see Bryson DeChambeau play in the Irish Open on the DP World Tour: “I mean, I think that would be great for the tournament, absolutely. Having someone like Bryson at the Irish Open, yeah, it would be great for the tournament.” He then was asked whether the national open should remain as a stand alone DP World Tour event with the upcoming PGA Tour changes: “If it's going to stay -- I guess next year it might change because of the Ryder Cup in Adare, but if it's going to stay in that September date, I don't see how it becomes part of the PGA Tour season when the PGA Tour is going to be played from February to August.” The Amgen Irish Open is to be held at Trump Doonbeg in September and there are strong rumours Bryson may make an appearance. Multiple sources indicate the LIV Golf Championship rings supplied every season by famous jeweller Ben Baller for the Individual and Team Champions have not yet been paid for and will not be presented this week. Once again, players appear to have not been informed of what’s going on. Despite me reporting it a month ago, Thomas Pieters and the LIV Golf communications team spoke about the rings at yesterday’s press conference in Indianapolis and they appear to be expecting to receive them.

Rory McIlroy came into the first FedExCup Playoff event from a long layoff. He then shot rounds of 74, 70, 72 and 72 to finish 66th. After the final round, he reacted to the week: “Obviously didn't come in here with a ton of reps, almost felt like the more the week went on, the more I felt lost with my golf swing a little bit. “I figured it out a little bit the last few holes today, I think. Yeah, I just sort of -- yeah, swing wasn't in sync and obviously didn't do a ton of practice coming in here. “I guess nice to shake the rust off a little bit, but I'm going to have to work pretty hard between now and next Thursday to feel like I have any sort of golf game to compete next week.” He then spoke about what he is going to do in preparation for the BMW Championship next week: “ I'm going to go home. I'll work with Michael and Harry. Yeah, just try to get the swing into some sort of better sync and better flow. Then, yeah, go to Bellerive Tuesday and obviously try to prepare for that golf course. “Yeah, to me it's more about obviously the execution of what I'm doing right now, and the execution wasn't there this week. As I said, I'm going to have to sort of put the head down and grind from now until Thursday to try to feel like I have any sort of chance next week.” Even after a tough week, Rory is still projected 13th on the FedExCup standings and should comfortably make it to the Tour Championship. Open Championship leader Sam Burns played with Bryson DeChambeau today and he said the fans were very supportive of him after yesterday’s ruling. He also said he didn’t think Bryson deserved the penalty: “I thought the fans were very supportive of Bryson today. We didn't discuss it any. “In my personal opinion, I honestly feel bad for Bryson in the situation that he was in. From my perspective, I didn't feel like maybe there was enough evidence for him to deserve a penalty there. “I feel bad for him. I think he played an incredible round of golf late yesterday, and it's unfortunate to have something kind of like that where they come in after your round and tell you you're being docked two shots. “But props to him. He came out and played a really nice round of golf today, and that takes a lot of grit to be able to come out and do that. So I was impressed.” The Open

Scottie Scheffler elaborated on the Bryson DeChambeau rule incident from Friday and echoed Harris English’s comments about Bryson always being on TV and camera angles being different to what’s happening: “No. I've been really focused on the tournament. I think that opens up a greater discussion that -- all I can really say is I think maybe we need to be a little bit more strict in the way that we are policing guys, but it's a little bit of a balance because you've got certain guys like a Bryson who every shot he hits is going to be shown on TV. When you have camera angles that are far away, things can look different than they do when you're right there. “We've done a good job of -- I don't know, I hate saying stuff out here because I don't want anything to get taken out of context. All I'll say is Bryson, I've known him for a long time, and he's a lot of things, but he's definitely not a cheater. I've never seen him cheat once, whether we were having a putting contest on the putting green or chipping contest, or anytime we played amateur golf, I never saw anything suspicious. “When you're watching him there from that camera angle, maybe he was a touch careless around his ball, but I don't think he did anything intentionally. “We've seen penalties happen with -- like you remember Jon Rahm a couple years ago at the Memorial when his ball moved in the rough, and it's like to the naked eye, can you really tell that? “I think sometimes it's just a difficult position in the game of golf. When I was growing up, if this was the line between things that were -- like if this was the line, here are the rules and this was the right side of it and this is when you're doing things against the rule, you always tried to stray really far that way. I feel like at times, sometimes you see players maybe push it a little bit further than they should. “I think we need to kind of get back to the traditions of the game and maybe we do need to police things a little bit more stricter in the game. “But like I said, it's a tough line to kind of cross. So that's why it's hard for me to say anything like this. Bryson is a guy that I've known for a really long time. Like I said, he's not a cheater.” The Open

Rory McIlroy was asked ahead of The Open if he agrees with the idea that “Trackman Golfers” don’t do well at Opens: “No, I wouldn't totally agree with that. I think that TrackMan or any launch monitor, it's a very useful tool. I think you can get too into the numbers, which then can be detrimental. I think, yeah, TrackMan can be very useful. It can be -- I think it can actually help you with the feel of your golf swing at times. “If you see a certain number on TrackMan, it gives you a feeling of what you need to do, so if you can sort of match up the number you see on the screen with a feel that you have in your golf swing, I actually think you can become more feel-based. “I use TrackMan a lot in season because I feel like it's hard to work on technical positions when you're just trying to manage your pattern through the course of the season. I use TrackMan where it's like, okay, my path's getting a little to the right, I've just got to feel like I swing more left. Or my face angle is getting a bit left and I've got to feel like I hold it a bit more square through impact, whatever it is. “To me, I actually feel like it's a great tool to use when your swing gets off a bit and you can sort of train your feels back into where they need to be.” Rory McIlroy The Open LKD
