The sanitation guards popularly known as "Tankas" were brought back to help keep our communities clean and enforce sanitation laws. They started with GHS 70 a month in 2008. In 2012, it increased to just GHS 100 - and many say they were hardly paid at all. Unable to survive on such meagre and irregular allowances, many abandoned the job. Yet in 2022, Zoomlion received more than GHS 37 million to manage and pay the sanitation guards. Today, clogged drains, choked gutters and devastating floods have become a familiar sight across Ghana.

At the Tema Valco Roundabout, the most severe damage is within a lane that leads commuters from the Tema Harbour to other parts of Tema and Accra. The stretch has deteriorated so badly that it is described by some drivers as “manholes.” Rather than ease traffic, some residents told The Fourth Estate that the route is accident prone. Drivers using the stretch are forced to slow down to protect their vehicles from damage. A narrow pavement along the road has turned into a contested turf between pedestrians and motorists avoiding the damaged road. Most of the drivers, in an attempt to dodge the potholes, drive over pavement straight towards a busy bus stop, often startling pedestrians. Watch more here:

In 2008, the government in partnership with Zoomlion attempted to revitalize the work of the once feared health inspectors, popular known as, “Samansaman” or “Tankas”, across the country. To achieve this aim, 4,000 sanitation guards were recruited. However, nearly two decades later, although the supervisors of these guards say the programme has effectively collapsed, Zoomlion was paid over GHS 37 million in 2022 to manage the same number of guards recruited in 2008. The guards tell The Fourth Estate that most of their colleagues have quit due to the non-payment of their allowances. The Minister of Local Government, Ahmed Ibrahim, has refused to provide information on the project. Zoomlion has also not responded to an interview request. Read more:

Decayed and Neglected: The deplorable state of roundabouts in Accra and Tema At the Ogbodjo roundabout, the problem is made worse by recent downpours. The potholes become muddy pools of water after it rains. The rainwater masks holes deep enough to punish any driver who mistakes the surface for safe asphalt. The roundabout is a busy route for commuters, linking Madina, East Legon and Adenta/Ashaley Botwe. Ironically, the La Nkwantanang Municipal Assembly, which is responsible for basic infrastructure in the area is less than 300 metres away. Despite the proximity of the assembly to the heavily damaged roundabout, the state of the roundabout has remained unchanged save for some occasional patch work. Watch more here:

A desperate Nigerian woman sought refuge at Ridge Hospital for her brother. She was given an invoice for GHS 7,000. But while preparing to pay, the pharmacy told her she needed to pay $7,000. The $7,000 bill shocked her, but desperation won. Read more:

While investigating the deaths in police custody, we found at least four people, according to the police, allegedly hanged themselves with blankets. But, Osagyefo Oliver Barker-Vormawor, who has spent weeks in police custody, says it is implausible for that to happen. 👉
