Another unforgettable moment at Luka’s basketball camps in Iowa: Boston Celtics Head Coach Joe Mazzulla didn’t just come to support Luka; he showed up for our kids, our families, and our community. He traveled to Iowa, stepped onto the court, coached, encouraged, listened, and made every young athlete feel seen, heard, and valued. A heartfelt thank you to Boston Celtics and Coach Mazzulla for doing something so unexpected and so meaningful. Great leaders do what others wouldn’t think to do. They show up when they don’t have to. They go where they aren’t expected. And they make people feel that they matter. This is why the Harvard leadership author, Linda A. When Luka was in the 7th grade, coaches/parents told me my son should probably try out for the drama or chess club instead of basketball. He was slow, non-athletic, in WADC league and not what AAU was looking for. We didn’t fight the noise, we built a process. Skepticism is oxygen if you know how to breathe it in. Over 20,000 hours of fundamentals, visualization, feedback, and relentless work through his Sr year in college; no one did more. I can’t put into words what it means to see my son wear the green and white of the Boston Celtics. Since a boy, Luka's been a Fan. For us, it’s not just about 🏀, it’s about legacy & being part of something bigger than yourself. Every summer, Luka and I focus on areas where he needs growth. Many times this involves 3-4 workouts/day, the majority w/o the 🏀; Luka’s body transformation, improvements on defense, strength, hand speed, along w/mental work, reflect this. Most people overlook Luka's growth & judge quickly based on his NPOY days. To know Luka is to understand his resilience and continual transformation; you can't count him out ever. We’re blessed. Some victories never appear on a scoreboard. Watching my son, Luka, and his cousin Amar stand shoulder to shoulder in the Bosnia and Herzegovina jersey is one of them. Cousins by blood. Brothers by life. Together, they're fulfilling a promise made to their grandfather, Refik Muftić, to one day represent the country he loved with all his heart. One generation was forced to flee war.
