From nanny kid to bracha under the chuppah — the Now Jewish Nanny’s story: Four years ago I came across a TikTok video of girl named Adriana Fernandez. Adriana grew up Christian in Florida and trained as an opera singer. While in school she started nannying for Orthodox Jewish families in Boca Raton after answering an ad. She knew almost nothing about Judaism at first. The children and families taught her kosher rules, Shabbat, modest dress, Hebrew terms, and daily Orthodox life. She found the community warm and the lifestyle meaningful. She began posting light, respectful videos about her outsider experiences as “Non-Jewish Nanny” on TikTok and Instagram. I posted them here on X. The content went viral; she built a large following that was mostly Jewish and appreciated her positive take. Over time curiosity became a desire to live that life herself. She began a private Orthodox conversion process with local rabbinic sponsors, studying seriously, attending classes and services, and changing her dress and habits without telling her audience. The October 7, 2023 attacks strengthened rather than weakened her commitment. She completed conversion under the Rabbinical Council of America in mid-March 2025 (11 Adar 5785), taking the name Adina Shoshana. Shortly afterward she changed her handle to Now Jewish Nanny and announced the news. Last night she got married. The child who received a bracha under the chuppah? Most Orthodox Jews interpret this (based on the Talmud and other rabbinic texts) as a prohibition against shaving the sideburns above a certain point (the cheekbone). Hasidic Jews often adopt a stricter interpretation, holding that one should not cut the sidelocks at all, allowing them to grow long. The style of peyos varies widely even within the Orthodox community. Some men keep their peyos short, some tuck them behind their ears, and some curl them. Many Hasidic texts draw from sources like the Zohar and Arizal to explain the deep, spiritual meaning behind peyos. One interpretation suggests the hair in this area is a "gate" or channel for divine flow and energy.
