Inside the Crisis: Food Banks Struggle as Shipments Dwindle Part 1 of 4 – Day 1: The Drop-Off In the heart of California’s Central Valley — one of the most productive agricultural regions in the world — food banks are receiving fewer shipments, with little to no warning. Today, we follow a routine delivery to a local food bank, where pallets of produce and dry goods are dropped off to feed over a thousand people. But staff are already warning: the supplies won’t stretch far. State and federal cuts have left shelves increasingly bare, while demand continues to skyrocket. One worker described it bluntly: “We used to plan for families. Now we plan for scarcity.” This is Part 1 of our most recent investigation, a four-part series that aims to bring awareness to a growing crisis — and to inspire a return to local, community-rooted journalism.
