I’m Black first. This nation was founded treating Black people as property, and even today there are ongoing efforts to restrict Black political and economic power. Conservatives will try to gaslight you, but I prefer facts. Under Brandon M. Scott and Governor Wes Moore, Baltimore has seen its lowest homicide levels in decades. Even Stephen A. Smith had to ask Officer Tatum what’s wrong with identifying as Black first when you understand America’s history and its relationship with Black people. A white teenager is accused of spray-painting racist slurs and Nazi symbols on a Black family’s home in East Baton Rouge Parish. According to attorney @ryankeiththompson, this family endured months of harassment before this incident. Now, an elderly Black woman says she is afraid to return to her home. If Louisiana is serious about being tough on crime, acts of racial terror and intimidation must be treated as seriously as any other crime. No family should have to live in fear because of hate. Yall gone hear me one day. Black turnout exceeded white turnout in Louisiana’s May election. Black voters are 31% of registered voters, but made up 34% of the people who showed up. I was on here every day telling y’all to vote because this is what happens when Black people participate at higher rates. We influence elections the same way we influence culture. Jeff Landry lost all 5 constitutional amendments. Even in Republican parishes, voters rejected his agenda. Never underestimate the power of informed, organized Black voters. Look at their faces. What do you see? I wanted to look them in the eye and say, on the record, that they are attempting to reconstruct this government to undo Black progress. Their targeting of @calvin4clerk is rooted in that reality, and it needed to be called out plainly. I showed up speaking for myself. No organization in Louisiana sent me. No party asked me to come. I say that to make clear much of this work is being done independently, without formal partnerships, and without the budgets, staff, or institutional backing many established organizations have. I came because what they are doing is wrong. The court reconstruction happening in New Orleans has been done in different ways already in Baton Rouge and across this state—especially in the largest, Blackest cities—to dilute Black political power. I started Civics for the People because I know many of us don’t know what is happening inside government or how these systems are used. It’s my way of teaching the game and helping our people move with knowledge. Their elections are in 2027. We can send them home to frown and chew grass much gum as they please. James Talarico ran up the score in the whitest area of Texas. Meanwhile Harris County — home to a million Black people — only produced 189,000 total Democratic primary votes. Talarico had a strategy to target white and Latino voters and the data shows that’s how he won. Black people have to realize the power we have and maximize it. People don’t want to highlight raw numbers because they cut out the emotion. They paint a clear picture of how we got here. Black communities in the Deep South aren’t being engaged at the level needed to turnout and flip states. That is the core issue with the Democratic Party. If James Talarico is going to be successful in the fall he’s going to need to engage Black voters in Texas with the same funding and energy he’s put into Hispanic voters. Beto lost chasing the middle while 900,000 Black voters in Texas stayed home when he ran. I don’t apologize for wanting more Black leadership in America. We elect 80-85 white people to the U.S. Senate every term. I believe if we want something different we have to do something different, we have to send a different type of leader. I’m going live to discuss this further, Black people we have the numbers to shift the landscape. We need a hyper focus on turning our people out. In 250 years, Louisiana has sent 171 white men to Congress. During Reconstruction, Black people were elected and denied their seats. Only one Black man — Charles Nash — served in the 1800s. Then from 1877 to 1990, Louisiana sent zero Black people to Congress. Zero. For 113 years. In 1990, Black Louisiana finally got a member of Congress again. Since then, white voters have elected 25 members. Black voters have had 4. All 4 were in the same room fighting to keep the two seats Black Louisiana fought for. Don’t tell us this isn’t about denying Black people representation. It always has been. @repcleofields_ and Congressman Troy A. Carter were joined by former Congressman Cedric Richmond and William Jefferson to let the record be clear that Black voters are due fair maps. This image should put things into perspective for you. Two days of early voting are done in Louisiana. Only 10,000 of the state’s 925,000 Black voters have shown up so far. That means more than 915,000 Black voters still can go do your part and vote. Republicans are leading Democrats in early voting 22,000 to 14,000. If you live in East Baton Rouge Parish, vote YES for the Council on Aging and YES for our libraries. Governor Jeff Landry lost at the ballot box Saturday and came out swinging. Amendment 1 — the proposal that would’ve expanded his authority over state workers — got crushed. More than 600,000 Louisianans voted against it. Then he claimed Don Lemon led protesters into a church. Don was there as a reporter covering a protest. Those aren’t the same thing. People can disagree on politics, but facts still matter. Louisiana voters sent a message Saturday. They rejected Jeff’s constitutional amendments for a second straight year. Jeff is now 0-9 on ballot measures sent to voters. That’s a hell of a record for somebody who talks like they can’t lose. And now he’s back on his bullsh*t. Republicans in the legislature should look at the election results and ask themselves if they want to pivot or sink with Jeff. Your choice. Jeff never cared about helping working class people in Louisiana. He’s chasing conservative dreams while creating America’s latest nightmare. The voters will have the final say.

Did you know that DIXON WALLACE MCMAKIN, who is pushing bills to eliminate the seat of @calvin4clerk, is the announcer for LSU sports? Dixon is from Baton Rouge, but he’s working to take away the clerk’s office in New Orleans and, in turn, nullify the votes of thousands of Black people. During debate, Dixon invoked language that echoed George Wallace, the segregationist former governor of Alabama. That history matters, especially while legislation is being used to overturn the will of voters in New Orleans. I’m curious how the Black Student Union and former Black athletes feel about Dixon being the voice of the Tigers. President Rousse, you have thousands of Black alumni in New Orleans being impacted by your sports announcer’s actions in his day job. I’m just wondering if y’all have connected the dots on Rep. It’s a wild thing to watch the Vice President of the United States post content suggesting that white men are being discriminated against. That mentality has existed in America since Reconstruction, after slavery ended. The idea has always been: they deserve everything, and everyone else should have nothing—because it’s all “owed” to them in a fairytale version of America. A country that became the richest on Earth off the free labor of enslaved people, including the ancestors of Southerners like me. Black unemployment is rising under Trump and Vance. America is less affordable for everybody—including white men, the majority of whom voted for Trump. Black people are under attack in this country. The propaganda is designed to keep those attacks going by convincing white men to blame Black people instead of the billionaires who are actually robbing us all—laughing all the way to the bank. America isn’t harder for white men because of Black people. It’s harder because, like generations before you, you bought into the “white is right” lie. You chose the white guy again—and now he’s cashing the checks while telling you to call a hotline.

Louisiana ranks near the bottom in damn near everything that matters — economy, crime, education, healthcare, infrastructure — but instead of fixing that, they’re focused on taking power from a majority Black community in New Orleans. This bill to remove the Clerk of Criminal Court isn’t about reform. It’s about control. You can’t say you believe in local control and then override local voters when you don’t like who they elected. I said it plain: this is reconstructionist, and it’s racist. You use the government as a job farm building jails in your to employ your constituents and then talk efficiency and eliminate jobs in Black communities. Justin Fairfax murdered his wife Cerina in their home, then killed himself and left their kids to pick up the pieces. As Black men, we need to be clear in moments like this: nothing is worth killing a Black woman. Nothing. Pain is real. Divorce is real. Depression is real. Rage is real. But none of it justifies violence against a woman. Too many Black women carry the weight of loving men who haven’t healed. Too many children are left to pick up trauma they didn’t create. A man who cannot control his anger is dangerous. And too often, the people closest to him pay the highest price. We don’t want excuses when others kill us. We shouldn’t make excuses when Black men kill Black women either. Accountability must be consistent. Protection must be intentional. Healing must be a priority. I grieve for Cerina, her children, and everyone who loved her. And I want Black men to hear this plainly: If you harm a woman, that is not manhood. Get help before you become harm.

These four Black men are the only Black people elected to serve in Congress from Louisiana since the 1870s. Louisiana has elected more than 170 white men to Congress during that same period. Yet today, a corrupt Supreme Court, a puppet governor, and a weak-backed legislature have decided to strip elected power from Black people. That means other people decide how our tax dollars are invested in our communities. I spoke with @repcleofields_, Congressman Troy A. Carter, former Rep. @cedric_richmond, and former Rep. William Jefferson about why they went to the Louisiana State Capitol to testify against the congressional maps being pushed through. For years, I’ve been saying what happens in Louisiana will impact America. Here we are. This week, the Louisiana House of Representatives plans to pass maps that dilute Black voting power. Our response cannot be silence. Our response has to be showing up in numbers this November and beginning the work of taking power back.

They are a reflection of some of the worst parts of America, and history will remember them in 4K. Next week, this committee will vote on Louisiana’s congressional maps. A group of 5-10 white men, organized and fundraised with 800 people, to mobilize a vote of 17,421 people to breakaway and create a new city in my home town. People often ask me why I’m so direct about race. It’s in my face everyday how clear some in our city think about Black people and leadership. Baton Rouge is only on its 2nd Black mayor in its 200 year history. So historic neglect by previous leaders created a tale of two cities. I’ve been saying it for over a decade. Now it’s here. One day these videos I make will start getting you to ask why aren’t you doing more? These white men all over 50 just organized an effort that will impact us for the next 200 years. And if more people had showed up, if more people had organized, we wouldn’t be here. To my folks in Atlanta. Take notice. Buckhead and what they attempted to do a few years ago, trust they are taking note. I hope you are too. There are people in this country who will do everything in their power not to be under Black leadership. Let’s be clear, what’s wrong with America wasn’t created by Black people. What’s wrong in Louisiana is inequity that breeds all the social ills including crime. I want to be very clear, they drew the line in the sand when they created a new city. So I intend to be lending my voice to make sure we protect every investment for the citizens of Baton Rouge. We’ve built the South Side, and they packed up their toys. Now, it’s time for Baton Rouge to do what is in the best interest of Baton Rouge. This is and has always been a war for resources for them, we need to do whatever is in our power to protect our resources as a city. There is no room to compromise with people who have literally divided this community, to make a 70% white city. All the people who say, they couldn’t put up with what people put up with in the 1960’s. You’re on the clock, we in the field working at this change. You can join us whenever you realize these types of people are after your kids resources everyday. Jeff Landry has been the chief law enforcement officer of Louisiana for over a decade — eight years as AG, three as governor. We are still ranked #50 in crime. The governor stood at a podium today after a mass shooting at the Mall of Louisiana and offered nothing but the same failed playbook. More jails. More Angola. More dog whistles. At some point the record has to speak louder than the rhetoric. The data is clear — Jeff Landry’s policies cost us more money and they don’t make us safer. I am praying for every family impacted by this act of violence and all the violence across our state. Too many families are carrying this grief because our leaders choose to be reactive instead of proactive. Notice I’m not focused on his dog whistles and racism — that’s what he wants. Spent part of Friday showing folks from the other side of town ways we can directly improve the quality of life for tax payers in North Baton Rouge. This park is a 200 acre asset, but it has a bridge down and tires in the park. This isn’t a new problem. The bridge has been down for over a decade. BREC hasn’t made it a priority but we are spending $50 - $80 million on the LSU Lakes, this trail is less than a mile from Southern University. We can’t continue to invest in one area of town and let the other side sit in decay. Sid Edwards Mayor-President said he wanted people to see the things I showed him. Time will tell if the improvements happen. I’ve been fighting for North Baton Rouge for a decade. If we don’t speak up for our communities others will define the narrative and we the people end up on the short end of the stick. Speak the truth even when it’s uncomfortable.
