“Artificial intelligence carries high potential to support health care workers and to improve how care is delivered. But this potential is only realized if AI is applied with purpose, strong values and people at the center.” Minister Paula Ingabire (Paula Ingabire), Minister of ICT & Innovation for Rwanda (Ministry of ICT and Innovation | Rwanda) Rwanda currently has only one healthcare worker per 1,000 people, far below the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation of about four per 1,000. It would take 180 years for that gap to close at the current pace of progress. So, as part of the 4x4 reform initiative, Minister of Health Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana (Dr Sabin Nsanzimana) recently announced the launch of an AI-powered Health Intelligence Center in Kigali to help ensure limited health care resources are being used as wisely as possible. As part of the #Horizon1000 initiative, we aim to accelerate the adoption of AI tools across primary care clinics, within communities and in people’s homes. When Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) meets leadership, inclusion scales. In Rwanda, Rwanda Information Society Authority and Sharon Umunyana are deploying Mojaloop Foundation to build an inclusive instant payments system that cuts costs, retains national ownership and keeps data secure. As we head into the Global DPI Summit 2025 2025, it is clear that with open, interoperable DPI, governments can connect citizens to safe, affordable financial services, empowering women, small businesses and families to fully participate in the digital economy.
