🚨76 year old arrested in Portsmouth after wearing full niqab at protest A man claiming to be a gender-fluid Muslim convert turned up in a niqab at Saturday’s protest. Police had already banned face coverings to conceal identity and said the rule would apply equally. He was arrested. The law includes a later defence for genuine religious coverings, but officers can still require removal or arrest first. Expect the same power at future protests. Anyone concealing their face in a designated zone - balaclava, mask or niqab can be asked to uncover. How consistently police apply it will decide whether this stays equal or becomes selective.
