Recently, while referring to China, the Hon'ble Prime Minister made light of the physical features of the Chinese, especially with respect to the shape of their eyes. Let me educate the Hon'ble PM that when young men and women come from the Northeast to different parts of India, they're often teased for the very same physical features. This kind of language only perpetuates the harassment and is used to taunt and tease the people of NE.

Today, I joined the people of Assam in bidding a final farewell to Zubeen Garg. Across Assam, India, and the world, countless hearts mourn the loss of this extraordinary soul. His music and spirit touched generations, leaving a legacy that will continue to inspire for years to come. Unplanned construction, land grab and contractor specific flyover have taken priority over the needs of the ordinary people of Guwahati. Greed for money and land is driving the BJP policy in Guwahati. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was the Guwahati Development Department Minister for a long time. Now his close associate is the Minister. But BJP Ministers care more about the road to their own house than preserving water bodies and building drainage systems. We are Indians, not Chinese. On 30 December, I joined students from across the Northeast at Jantar Mantar in Delhi in a powerful, student-led protest demanding justice for Anjel Chakma, who lost his life after a brutal, racially motivated attack in Dehradun. The protest reflected the deep pain, anger, and insecurity that people from the Northeast continue to experience due to persistent prejudice and racial violence. Today I stand in solidarity and with a grave sense of responsibility.

India is home to many religions, philosophies and schools of thought. Yet as a Republic, we chose one text to guide our nation above all others: the Constitution of India. On Constitution Day, we remind ourselves that its survival rests on our collective courage. The values in the Preamble, including justice, liberty, equality and fraternity, are increasingly sidelined by those in power. Institutions meant to protect our freedoms are weakened, dissent is discouraged, and constitutional morality is treated as an inconvenience. At a time when democratic norms are under strain and the balance of power tilts dangerously, we must remember that the Constitution does not defend itself. It lives only when we stand up for it, uphold its spirit, and hold every government accountable to its founding ideals.

The Teok-Sivasagar Highway is an important road in the Jorhat region, critical for boosting connectivity. Work for several portions of the road has been ‘ongoing’ for the past several years. The condition of the road is deplorable. From frequent accidents to long traffic jams, this portion is affected with several issues. Several contractors have been brought in and left the job mid-way. Multiple tenders of work have been issued, to no effect. People are facing severe inconvenience. I urge Hon’ble Minister of Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari to intervene and take immediate action. Shri Gadkari has visited Jorhat in the recent past. I’m optimistic that he will take the necessary steps to ensure work is completed at the earliest and people don’t have to suffer indiscriminately.

The time has come for everyone to relook at masculinity. What does it mean to be strong? How do we face up to hidden anxieties? Can there be another way to express other than self-harm or violence? Do boys suffer generational trauma? Are outdated ideas of how boys and men should act reappearing in toxic masculinity? How do we teach young men about grief, vulnerability, emotional strength ? China's recent proposal to build a massive dam on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet, near the Indian border, has sparked concerns over its potential impact on downstream areas, particularly Assam, and other regions in India. Ten years ago, in Parliament, I had raised the urgent issue of the importance of the Brahmaputra in Assam. I had also highlighted that as per global convention China can claim greater right of access to the Brahmaputra. A decade later, it appears the concerns of water security have not been taken seriously. This upcoming project by China will only exacerbate the challenges faced by Assam and other regions.
