The movie I kept thinking about while watching Citizen Vigilante was Abel Ferrara’s Ms .45. It’s the story of a beautiful, mute woman who goes on a rampage after being raped twice in one day. She first targets predators, then she becomes indiscriminate. Unlike Citizen Vigilante, this film makes her answer for that. It isn’t morally clean, but at least Ferrara understood crossing that line costs something. Citizen Vigilante mistakes a sociopathic landlord with a podcast for a righteous avenger. Formally, Ms .45 is also just a far better movie.

But as we celebrate his life, seek out the performances that meant the most to him: Tender Mercies, where he found God in a quiet Texas town. The Apostle, which he spent 13 years getting made. His family asked his fans to honor him by “watching a great film, telling a good story around a table with friends, or taking a drive in the countryside.” That sounds about right to me. RIP to a legend.
