At a time when Virginians are already struggling with higher electric costs, Governor Spanberger signed a bill increasing the average electric bill by $10-13 per month. Ignore the press releases claiming it's about affordability. Look at your paycheck. Look at your electric bill. Every two weeks, you're taking home less. Every month, you're paying more. That's the reality Virginia families are facing, and it’s not right.

After this 11th-hour budget deal was released on Friday at 7 PM, I spent the entire weekend going through it. It’s 600 pages long. Three major problems with the budget: ❌ This is a data center-approved compromise. Data centers are not required to pay the full cost of the infrastructure that is currently passed on to everyday Virginians through their electric bills. ❌ A 150% pay raise for members of the General Assembly. We’ve barely been able to produce a budget on time this year. What’s been done to earn that? ❌ The retail marijuana market proposal was a separate 250-page document. This should be a standalone bill we can vote on, not in an 11th-hour special session stunt. Bottom line: Virginia needs a budget – no one wants a government shutdown. But we need a budget that lowers costs, respects taxpayers, and protects families who are paying higher electric bills. I’ll be voting NO.

This bill criminalizes the victims of crime. If a criminal breaks into your car and steals your firearm, YOU get in trouble. It was already bad policy, but the Conference Committee made the bill even worse. It specifically exempts members of the General Assembly from the law! It’s yet another example of “rules for thee, but not for me.”

Virginians have been very clear: get rid of the Car Tax. Members of both parties, including our Governor, campaigned on eliminating it. So I introduced a budget amendment to do just that. But when given the opportunity, Republicans were the only ones who voted in favor of repealing it. Virginians want action, not lip service.

My speech on the Senate floor this morning. The people who will have to live under the consequences of this map, including many in my district, turned out and fought against gerrymandering. But the dark money from out of state, special interest groups, and DC politicians barely dragged this amendment over the line. Now this moves from the ballot box to the courthouse. The question now is whether the Supreme Court of Virginia will enforce the rule of law.

Why are national Democrat groups spending $20 million to gerrymander Virginia’s congressional districts? The answer is very clear: in 2021, two-thirds of Virginians voted to end partisan gerrymandering. Now they’re trying to go against the will of the voters to undo that decision.

Senate Bill 749 bans commonly-owned firearms based on their features, instead of targeting those who are committing the crimes with guns. It does so in a way that turns everyday Virginians’ peaceful conduct into a crime. Let’s be clear: criminals already ignore the law. This bill creates a new way to prosecute those who were never the problem.
