Artapanus of Alexandria is one of the oldest primary sources we have by any author who references the Torah or Moses besides Ezekiel the Tragedian (250BCE) & maybe Hecataeus of Abdera (310BCE). Artapanus claimed that Moses was identified as the Greek god Hermes and that he travelled to Athens where he was known as Musaeus (famous Greek mythical lawgiver) to become the teacher of Orpheus, who taught Homer, who taught all the Greeks. This idea was repeated by other Jewish authors like Aristobulus of Alexandria as well as Greeks like Alexander Polyhistor & Numenius of Apamea, who reverse the roles and make Musaeus the son of Orpheus or that he was the Hierophant of Eleusis before the time of Homer. This was something that commonly took place in Alexandria in Jewish circles around this time. Psuedo-Orphic, Pseudo-Homeric and Pseudo-Greek poets and philosophic texts were composed that re-wrote the Greek classics in a way that included Moses & Abraham as central figures or equating Zeus with Yahweh. Josephus later made the claim that Hercules was married into the Abrahamic line before becoming the progenitor of the Macedonians and Thessalians. These ideas were baked into the culture that led up to the Gospels and the target audience of the Gospels were the people that were primed by these pseudo texts from Alexandria and Rome's Sibylline Oracle tradition which was also fusing Pagan tradition with Jewish legends.
