A vocal trainer breaks down Jinyoung’s performance of “When I stop thinking”, teasing out all the little things – from technique to subtle foxiness 😆 – that make people want to melt into his voice~ (excerpted) (0:13) “To begin with, his voice has depth because it’s naturally on the lower side. (...) If a voice is only clear, it can end up sounding piercing or tiring to listen to. But if it only has depth, it can sound overly muffled or blurry. He has those two things in really good balance. That’s why people often talk about singing that’s ‘half air, half voice’, or singing that sounds ‘like you’re speaking’. In the end, those expressions are really talking about exactly that balance. So when you hear Jinyoung sing and think, ‘It almost sounds like he’s just speaking’, there’s an analytical explanation for why it comes across that way.” (0:55) “Right here, he creates a clear contrast in the tone. Up until this point, the vocal fold closure is a little firmer – (...) He starts mixing in a little more breath. So he’s creating tonal contrast. At first, he brings out more of the tone colour, then in the latter half, he shifts into a slightly lighter tone. There’s a little push-and-pull between the two. That’s something good singers do. Starting from that balanced state, he moves a little this way, then a little that way – and he does it extremely well. (...) Can you hear it? The song isn’t just moving along in one straight line. When you look at him as a person, he never comes across as overly gloomy. Nor does he seem overly high-energy. He just has this calm, well-balanced presence. He gives off the impression that he’s always wearing a gentle smile. I think that contributes to the feeling we get as well. That’s not something we can explain scientifically. But sometimes, it’s precisely those things that move us the most.” (3:32) “He also uses this kind of breathy tone extremely well. When you use this sort of tone well, it makes the song feel much softer. Instead of having the rough texture of sandpaper, it feels more like silk.
