My thoughts on Magnus Carlsen, FIDE, and Jeansgate. Of course, on the one hand, nobody should be above the rules, and warnings were given. Other players changed. Also, clearly there was a lot bubbling under the surface for a while. On the other hand, the players and the chess moves are the main attraction. I imagine less than 1% of chess fans care about what players are wearing, as long as they are neat and presentable. Athletes get massive fines all the time. Suspending is an absolute final step for excessive violations and seems unwarranted in this case.
