Today in the House, I raised the horrific murder of Henry Nowak with the Home Secretary. The killing was a senseless and appalling crime. My condolences remain with Henry’s family, whose dignity throughout has been remarkable. I made clear that there is absolutely no religious justification for the actions of Vickrum Digwa. His crimes were mindless, brutal, and wrong, and I welcome the fact that our courts reached the same conclusion. This view is shared across the Sikh community. I have asked the Home Secretary to meet with MPs to discuss the wider issues of public safety, knife crime and freedom of religious observance raised by this case. We must honour Henry’s memory by ensuring these important issues are addressed.

I highlighted what a well-run Labour Council working in partnership with a Labour Government looks like in Smethwick and Sandwell: - Lower council tax - Investment in local services like parks and new leisure centres - Being the 3rd best in the country for fixing potholes - Support for children and families - All our libraries kept open Real change, by Labour delivered locally and nationally. I spoke about my beliefs, my predecessors, our incredibly diverse yet harmonious Smethwick community & the challenges we face. I spoke the day before the Southport disturbances about the increasing hate and aggression in our public discourse & it being the responsibility of all of us to challenge and address this.
