Kara Robinson was 15 when a man put a gun to her neck and forced her into a plastic storage container. What he did not realize was that while Kara was terrified, she was also paying attention. On June 24, 2002, Kara was outside a friend's home in South Carolina when a stranger approached. He forced her into his vehicle and drove her to an apartment, where he held and sexually assaulted her for approximately 18 hours. Kara understood that fighting him physically could get her killed. So she tried something else. She talked to him. She deliberately engaged with him, attempting to make him comfortable enough to lower his guard. At the same time, she began quietly collecting information. She noticed details inside the apartment. She remembered the layout. She paid attention to objects, surroundings and anything that might later tell police where she had been. She even managed to learn information about her captor himself. Then he made a mistake. He eventually fell asleep. Kara slipped free, made it out of the apartment and ran for help. But escaping was only part of what she accomplished. When police questioned her, the frightened 15-year-old was able to give investigators an extraordinary amount of detail. Her memory helped them identify her kidnapper as Richard Marc Evonitz. Then detectives discovered something much worse. Evonitz was wanted in connection with the abductions and murders of three girls in Virginia: Sofia Silva, 16, and sisters Kristin and Kati Lisk, 15 and 12. Police closed in on him. Evonitz fled, leading officers on a pursuit before taking his own life. Kara had survived a man linked to the murders of girls close to her own age because, during 18 hours of terror, she had managed to do something incredibly difficult.
