Solar physicist at LMSAL (alum UTkyAst). I believe space weather missions (for safe human space exploration) need a way higher investment than science missions.

The latest X8.1 flare was eruptive you might have expected. It was a big filament (cool material) eruption. It was also seen as a coronal wave. We need to wait for more coronagraph data to say if/when the associated CME will arrive, but it will probably on Feb 4.

Gorgeous eruption that has become a halo CME on its way to Earth (likely arriving on December 9). Quite strong shock, given that proton flux has started to rise,

Close-up view of the Memorial Day X2.8 flare. This is an animation of SDO/AIA 171 Å images. Note loop oscillations right after the eruption, and a subsequent growth (apparent rising motion) of post-flare loops.

Today (2025/06/15) there was a notable eruption, associated with an M8.4 flare in AR 14114. Its location in Earth strike zone may help impact us, but the eruption and coronal waves were quite limited. Here I show three kinds of AIA images for you to make your own predictions.

On 21 March 2025, major dimmings near disk center followed the M1.2 flare in AR 14028 in the southwest (lower right) quadrant. This may be an example of sympathetic eruption caused by (unseen) wave-like disturbances. I think the ETA of the CME will be late 23 Mar to 24 Mar.
