Great White shark just off the coast of Montauk, NY today....what a beauty! This drone footage was taken today, May 12, 2025 in Montauk, New York. At 8:30am this morning I spotted my first Great White Shark of the season! Just a few hundred feet from the coast of Montauk. Great whites are known to feed and breed off the coast of New York, and this should not alarm anyone. For me this was super exciting, as I have been flying these waters for 8 years and this is the earliest shark spotting I have had in a season and it is also the closest to shore I have spotted a great white. Multiple schools of striped bass are migrating along the Long Island coast right now and will attract larger predators. Seen here is a small striped bass frenzy which generally refers to a more widespread, chaotic feeding where fish are aggressively pursuing a variety of baitfish. Seagulls and cormorants join the action, vying for baitfish. I am not certain what they are feeding on, as they appear to be small fish and not sand eels. Sharks on shore with paddleboarder- Bridgehampton NY Featured here is drone footage taken of a paddleboarder among multiple sharks in a school of menhaden baitfish on shore. These are most like spinner sharks averaging 4-5ft in length feeding on a bait ball of what locals call “bunker”. I watched as this school traveled right in front of the Bridgehampton Tennis & Surf Club, 8/12/25 approximately 10:45am. This was approximately 125ft from the shore and according to the lifeguards at the nearby Mecox Beach this was a lifeguard for the club in Bridgehampton, NY on the paddleboard. Swimmers were evacuated at multiple ocean beach locations in the Hamptons yesterday due to numerous sharks feeding on schools of menhaden (aka bunker) within just a few feet of the shore. Southampton Town Lifeguards did an incredible job surveying the water and keeping beachgoers safe via kayak. I spotted a total of 8 spinner sharks in this school and captured 5 on one frame. These sharks measured 4-8ft in length. This school of fish travelled past Flying Point Beach, eastbound in Water Mill, NY yesterday 10:20am- 10:50am. Coopers Beach in Southampton Village also evacuated swimmers’ midday for the same reason.
