Sakuga Over The Years (July 2013) KA: Shinya Ohira (大平 晋也) Movie: The Wind Rises (風立ちぬ) More Miyazaki, and this would be his last big film until 2023 with Boy and the Heron. And from it here’s another great Ohira scene and it’s always so weird seeing his work look very clean for Ghibli stuff (as opposed to his usual style) and doing a character acting scene of all things, like it’s the sort of scene I would usually associate with Takeshi Honda. Ohira pulls it off great though and you can very much tell it’s him at 0:52 with the guy’s flowing hair and clothes. Crazy stuff

Sakuga Over The Years (January 2014) (part 2) KA: Bahi JD Anime: Space Dandy (スペース☆ダンディ) (episode 1) In Shinichiro Watanabe’s josei adaptation at studio MAPPA, Kids on the Slope, young animator Bahi JD made his first appearance showing a lot of promise already, and here he is on another Watanabe putting out some of his best work today this day just two years after Kids on the Slope. His spatial awareness and volume for the character drawings is unreal. It would be a common theme in his scenes to make his characters fly around, as also seen in JJK season 2. The scene of them on fire and diving into water is also crazy as well. Well, it’s not actually water but some worm thing that looks like water. Space Dandy is a crazy show idk lmao.

Sakuga Over The Years (July 1992) KA: Mitsuo Iso (磯 光雄) Movie: Hashire Melos! (走れメロス!) More fantastic character animation from Iso! The sword fight has so much weight to it and it's cool how expressive everyone in the sequence is too. Apparently this is getting another limited screening soon, so here's to hoping it gets a better quality release in the future

Sakuga Over The Years (March 2000) KA: Toshiyuki Inoue (井上 俊之) OVA: Blue Submarine No.6 (青の6号) (episode 4) Full scene: Mahiro Maeda is more known for his character and creature designs (he recently had an artbook showcasing his work), but this is one of his directorial works at Gonzo. He used to do a lot of stuff there but now he’s more associated with Khara. I’ve thought maybe Inoue would’ve worked a lot with Maeda before this, but there’s only a few projects before this that they both worked on. Regardless, Inoue’s weighty character animation is on display as always and it’s cool to see that even many years later with Look Back, he’s still got it.

2024 Sakuga MAD! This has been quite the year for some crazy projects (Look Back, Uma Musume movie, Elusive Samurai, Delicious in Dungeon, Dandadan, One Piece, etc.) and I couldn't fit everything, but I tried to have most shows represented in some form or fashion, and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out! Sakuga Over The Years (May 2015) KA: Toshiyuki Inoue (井上 俊之) Movie: Miss Hokusai (百日紅~Miss HOKUSAI~) Another movie from IG’s best animation producer Keiko Matsushita! It reminds me a lot of A Letter to Momo, even though Okiura was only credited for “planning assistance” on this one. Inoue, just like on Wolf Children, is showing that he can animate some of the most aesthetically pleasing snow animation I’ve ever seen coupled with some gorgeous weighty character acting. Even something as small as one of the kids kicking a tree has so much attention to detail put into it. There’s many more good character acting animators than these three, but I kinda consider Okiura, Honda and Inoue to be a trio of some of the OG GOATs for this type of realistic character animation.

Sakuga Over The Years (August 2004) KA: Takeshi Honda (本田 雄) Movie: Naruto the Movie: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow (劇場版 NARUTO 大活劇! 雪姫忍法帖だってばよ!!) Full scene: This scene kinda went viral cuz you get this ominous bar scene and then all of a sudden there’s a Naruto jumpscare lmao. For real though in terms of the animation, this is my favorite scene from Honda. Like Okiura, Honda has a very realistic style, but I also like how he exaggerates the expressions when it comes to Naruto. It’s crazy how much sauce these OG Naruto movies have and visually they’re timeless in my opinion. This one was directed by Tensai Okamura, who also directed MHA movie 4 just last year.

Sakuga Over The Years (October 2005) KA: Kenichi Yoshida (吉田 健一) Anime: Eureka Seven (交響詩篇エウレカセブン) (episode 26) An original mecha show by Bones! I really want to give this show a shot at some point because it just looks so interesting and it also has one of my favorite opening songs ever in DAYS by FLOW (COLORS is great too don’t get me wrong but DAYS I’d say is my favorite song from them). Kenichi Yoshida, an animator I’ve covered before, has done a lot of extensive work on this series as a character designer, main animator, AD work for some episodes and directed one of the EDs. His presence on this show is huge and along with that, he made a really fluid scene here with the way Eureka reaches out to Renton and her getting in the ship. This work was at Bones substudio B and I feel like it was one of the earlier works to cement them as the most creative substudio at Bones. Tying even more to that, Masayuki Miyaji directed this episode specifically, and he’d go on to directing his own original show, Xam’d Lost Memories also at studio B.

Sakuga Over The Years (February 2019) (part 1) KA: Weilin Zhang (張 魏林), Hakuyu Go (伍 柏諭) Anime: Mob Psycho 100 II (モブサイコ100 II) (episode 5) What happens when you have one of the most ambitious teams of young animators at the frontlines of an episode with a good schedule to execute their vision? Well you get what I think is Hakuyu Go’s best work as an episode director and what I think is one of the best looking anime episodes of all time in Mob season 2 episode 5. The episode is a full on sakuga fest but this is one of the two scenes I wanted to highlight. Like highlighting Kameda’s scene recently, the timing is a bit unfortunate with the recent things that Zhang has said, but I do think he is (not objectively THE best but) ONE OF the best animators of this generation and you can see that in 0:02 with the sheer level of volume control and fabric animation and some really wild effects. I’m not 100% sure where Zhang and Go’s parts are specifically but I think up to 0:14 is Zhang and the rest might be Go.

Sakuga Over The Years (March 2006) KA: Hisashi Mori (森 久司) Movie: Doraemon: Nobita’s Dinosaur 2006 (映画ドラえもん のび太の恐竜2006) Full scene: Dinosaur sakuga!!! I’m sure Megumi Ishitani would be a fan. I think people don’t realize that some of the Doraemon movies have some really stacked animators on them. This one in particular is a remake from one of the older movies and was directed by Ayumu Watanabe who has directed many interesting works (including Space Brothers which is one of my favorite anime, but very far from a sakuga show). We’ve also got Hisashi Mori back on this scene, not for a Hisashi punch, but still an ambitious and cool looking scene regardless

Sakuga Over The Years (September 1998) KA: Shinji Hashimoto (橋本 晋治), (Artist Unknown) Movie: Spriggan (スプリガン) For some reason screenshots I’ve seen of this movie reminded me of Akira, which is weird because Otomo wasn’t involved with character designs at all, but he did have chief supervision over it so maybe there’s a bit of his touch throughout the movie? Anyways, this one’s directed by Hirotsugu Kawasaki with character designs by Hisashi Eguchi (both artists I’ve made posts on this thread so that’s pretty cool) and this is my first post for Shinji Hashimoto! He tends to do scenes similarly to Shinya Ohira at times as they’d work together often. He did a lot of really ambitious stuff here like the scene of the guy jumping of the building and the close combat stuff is masterful. Also the zoom out at the end is dope. I think this is all Hashimoto but Booru also has an unknown artist credited so it may not be just him.

Ryo Onishi (大西 亮) Sakuga MAD I'm never posting a MAD this sooner another one again, but that Daima sequence was crazy man I just had to make a MAD for Onishi! One of Toei's star animators and one of the best out there in general imo. Long fight scenes with no cutaways and all ambition, scribbly zig zag smears for added exaggeration, fluid movement, and still maintaining strong character art. One of the GOATs for sure!
