Sakuga Over The Years (October 2016) KA: Tomohiro Shinoda (篠田 知宏), China (ちな), Fumiaki Kouta (光田 史亮), Ripa (りぱ), Mitsuru Ishihara (石原 満), Atsuki Shimizu (清水 厚貴), Artist Unknown PV: Flip Flappers (フリップフラッパーズ) OP I’ve highlighted a lot of Kiyotaka Oshiyama’s past work as a key animator and an episode director, but this is his first credit for directing an entire project! A much different work than Look Back, but still a really well animated one. Now while he’s solo animated episodes before, it would obviously be an arduous task to direct and animate every episode himself, but he’s involved practically as much as he can be by storyboarding half of the episodes as well as this OP and the ED and doing some key animation of his own. Now in terms of the OP itself, we’ve got some gorgeous work from a bunch of skilled animators. Now the cuts are very quick, but there’s some really crazy running and background animation both in cut 1 by Tomohiro Shinoda (who has worked a lot on projects that Yoshimichi Kameda is involved in) and cut 4 presumably done by Ripa.

Sakuga Over The Years (December 2005) KA: Ryo-Timo (りょーちも) Anime: Noein: To Your Other Self (ノエイン もうひとりの君へ) (episode 12) The web generation is here! Ryo-Timo is one of the first prominent figures of it showcasing the unique linework, exaggerated artwork and fluid movement of this generation pioneered by Norio Matsumoto (who also worked on this show). Nowadays I think Ryo-Timo is unfortunately not really involved with 2D animation and more involved with CG, but either way this is one of my favorite scenes from him. This show was directed by Kazuki Akane of Escaflowne fame and would go on to direct another influential web-gen series in Tetsuwan Birdy Decode. Takayuki Tanaka directed this stacked episode who I’m not all that familiar with, but he also directed arguably the best Birdy episode (season 2 episode 7) so he might’ve had ties to some of the bigger names on these episodes. And lastly, this show was at studio Satelight, but I don’t think this was necessarily indicative of the quality the studio was putting out at the time, as this team would be involved with many studios over the years (Birdy at A-1 Pictures, Naruto vs Pain at studio Pierrot, Yozakura Quartet at Tatsunoko Production, etc.).

Sakuga Over The Years (July 2004) KA: Kou Yoshinari (吉成 鋼) - 0:00-0:04, Hideki Kakita (柿田 英樹) - 0:04-0:06, Tadashi Sakazaki (坂崎 忠) (with some redraws by Yutaka Nakamura) - 0:06-end PV: Fullmetal Alchemist (鋼の錬金術師) OP4 Of course when bringing up FMA 03 and sakuga, I can’t go without mentioning the 4th OP with what some may consider one of the best cuts of animation ever! The depth perception of making Ed go towards the screen as he’s falling is masterful and so smooth due to Kou Yoshinari animating on 1s. The other cuts are great as well with some cool smears from Kakita and some debris from Sakazaki. Directed and storyboarded by both series director Seiji Mizushima and the legendary Yutaka Nakamura, so of course you get something as ambitious as this.

Sakuga Over The Years (October 2010) KA: Yoshimichi Kameda (亀田 祥倫) PV: Naruto Shippuden (NARUTO -ナルト- 疾風伝) ED15 It pains me that this ED is for filler because it is my favorite ED visual of all time and a bunch of people might not know it exists. It’s just Kameda, Kutsuna, ShingoYama, Koyanagi and others doing some great hand to hand and weapons combat for a minute 30 straight with a stylistic limited color palette. This Kameda cut is one of my favorites as well (if not my favorite) and while it definitely feels very Kanada in its pose-to-pose nature, it has this pretty fluid feeling as well. It’s funny how I said this about the post I highlighted for Hiroyuki Yamashita because he actually directed this ED! He was the director, storyboard artist, animation director, and did key animation as well. This is one of the first times he’d be involved in a project to this degree (this first being Shippuden ED12 which also looked good) and would continue to deliver for the franchise.
