🇯🇵 A fire burnt down the main hall of the Senju-ji Temple in Kameoka, Kyoto this morning. This temple dates back to 807 AD in the early Heian period. Residential buildings were also completely destroyed. With recent waves of shrine/temple fires across Japan we are very angry.

🇯🇵 I often see endless third world resentment toward the West and feel only pity. Hiroshima & Nagasaki were destroyed by atomic bombs. We lost everything. We didn't scream about trauma or demand endless reparations. We rebuilt. Today these cities are beautiful. So, drop the victimhood. Stop blaming history. Change and build something or otherwise get used to being disliked.

In this interview, Carl Benjamin 🏴 makes a point that many in Japan rarely consider, but which has become increasingly clear to people in the West. Many non-Western people feel deeply humiliated by the accomplishments of the west. When I say we in Japan "don't really think about it" I mean we've never internalized that kind of resentment. We know we can compete and succeed on our own terms. This confidence is a big reason why we Japanese have such a genuinely positive relationship with the west. Feeling humiliated and resentful against more advanced civilizations does nothing for anyone. It doesn't help you or make your country any better. It also damages any sense of having a pluralistic society (the type the west has tried and failed to create). We do experience this to some degree from countries like China but even that is limited since China has clearly succeeded since its free-market reforms. Most of the former colonies of the UK and France simply haven't so the resentment remains. It seems more and more that the citizens of those countries are realizing this.
