The United States is not a model of a successful economy — it is a model of an economy in which only the rich thrive. The bottom 50% of the US population own just 1–2% of the country’s wealth. The US ranks lower in social mobility than almost all other OECD countries. There are roughly 50 countries worldwide with a higher life expectancy than the US. The US economy is a paradox: despite being one of the world’s wealthiest nations, it is characterised by widespread economic deprivation.

We are witnessing something quite remarkable: a US president is single-handedly turning traditional allies away from the US and toward China. They are fed up with Trump’s “America First” posture, his narcissism, and his profoundly unserious approach to foreign affairs. Canada was the first to defect. France has strongly flirted with increased engagement with China. The UK just approved China’s mega-embassy project in London. We are seeing a shift away from American hegemony toward multipolarity — with a much stronger East to balance the power of the West. This is the silver lining of Trump’s presidency.

Jeffrey Sachs: "Our mainstream media are so lame or so bought or so phony that they report that the Iranian government has lost control of the economy without saying that the United States has crushed the Iranian economy. So, as usual, the public is told a big lie."

Western media often labels China an “unfair” trading partner for exporting too much. But from a development perspective, China is doing exactly what it should: making things and exporting them. Blaming China for exporting too much is blaming China for developing its economy.
