Coonskin (1975) is a hybrid live-action/animated film directed by Ralph Bakshi that uses bold, exaggerated satire to explore racism, stereotypes surrounding the African American community, and the social dynamics of 1970s America. The story follows Brother Rabbit, Brother Bear, and Preacher Fox—three animated characters who arrive in Harlem and encounter mobsters, corrupt officials, and opportunistic leaders, all framed by a live-action narrative told by an inmate 🔥 Ralph Bakshi The cast features several standout performers, including legendary musician Barry White, who appears in the live-action storyline as one of the two convicts planning a prison escape. His deep voice and imposing presence add weight to the framing narrative that surrounds the animated segments. Over time, however, it has become a cult classic and one of Bakshi’s boldest works, praised for its anti-racist message, provocative style, and experimental mix of genres. Today it’s recognized as a fierce piece of satire that dismantles stereotypes from within and exposes the social hypocrisy of 1970s America 🇺🇸 Ralph Bakshi

Much of the DNA of The Fifth Element can be traced back to Harry Canyon, one of the segments from the 1981 animated film Heavy Metal. Both stories feature a cynical flying taxi driver navigating a chaotic futuristic metropolis, only to become involved with a mysterious woman carrying something far more important than she appears 🚕 Luc Besson later brought legendary comic artist Moebius onto The Fifth Element as a concept designer. The influence goes beyond the taxi driver: the towering cityscapes, dense air traffic, eccentric characters, and comic-book sci-fi atmosphere all echo the world of Harry Canyon and the work of Moebius 🌃

The ‘Harry Canyon’ segment from Heavy Metal presents a chaotic futuristic city, filled with flying cars, neo-noir aesthetics, and a cynical protagonist who moves through a decadent urban world like a lone cab driver. This vision of the future blends gritty science fiction, adult humor, and a visual language rooted in Métal Hurlant. 🚕🌆 That same aesthetic stands as one of the clearest visual influences on The Fifth Element, especially in its depiction of the megacity, aerial traffic, and the pulp tone of the character Korben Dallas. The connection is further reinforced by the influence of artists linked to the Heavy Metal universe, such as Moebius, whose work helped shape the visual identity of the film directed by Luc Besson. 🚀🎬

The animated music video for Pearl Jam - Do the Evolution was co-directed by Todd McFarlane and Kevin Altieri. McFarlane, creator of the comic Spawn and producer of its HBO animated adaptation, brought the dark, visceral tone, while Altieri — a key figure behind Batman: The Animated Series — handled the narrative design and storyboards. The production was led by Epoch Ink Animation, working with a large international team of artists specialized in adult animation. The idea originated with Eddie Vedder, who wrote the lyrics alongside Stone Gossard and wanted a video that did not feature the band, opting instead for a fully conceptual approach. Inspired by Spawn, Vedder shared visual references with McFarlane, shaping the project into an allegory of human evolution. The video was created using traditional 2D animation, with hand-drawn and hand-painted cels, reinforcing its raw, symbolic aesthetic and aligning with the social critique at the core of the song by Pearl Jam.

Directed by Gerald Potterton in 1981, ‘Heavy Metal’ is an adult animated science fiction anthology that brought the provocative spirit of the magazine of the same name to the big screen, but it is in Taarna—the last warrior of a mystical lineage, silent and tragic—where the film finds its most enduring dimension: her figure not only condenses the epic scope, eroticism, and stylized violence that defined Heavy Metal’s visual identity, but also embodies a solitary, almost mythological form of heroism that turned the film into a cult classic and an icon of adult animation.

Released in 1978, this animated adaptation of The Lord of the Rings was directed by Ralph Bakshi and covers the first half of J. R. R. Tolkien’s saga, from the Shire to Helm’s Deep; it blends traditional animation with rotoscoping, giving the film a dark, adult tone that aimed to stay closer to the epic and tragic spirit of the source material 🗡️ Ralph Bakshi The scene of Gandalf facing the Balrog in Moria is one of the most iconic moments: heavy shadows, near-abstract fire, and weighty movement emphasize a mythic clash, more suggested than shown, where sacrifice carries as much impact as the action itself 🧙🏻♂️👹
