Just remembered why I don’t do this anymore It’s a complete waste of time Have my pig paddock sown with cornfield annuals

This field would have been soup ten years ago if we’d tried grazing it after this much rain But it’s way better draining now the soil os healthier and with a decent thatch on the top it can do it - as long as we move every day

We used to house 200 plus cattle I wouldn’t have believed anyone that said anything else was possible… you couldn’t pay me to house a cow now Tried both ways 1100ft up in one of the wettest places in England with a short growing season, and still works

Every week the cattle herds stay outside saves £500-700 in potential wintering costs Out wintering (done properly with planned grazing prep) has done more for our farm’s profitability than anything else we’ve ever done

Bit of a BOOKISH NEWSFLASH for you… For the last five years I’ve been researching and writing a book I’ve poured everything I’ve got in to it, and then some It is about this insanely beautiful place… and the people who live and work in it

With an amazingly supportive landlord, we’ve been involved in restoring a whole hillside near to where we live A mixture of creating wood pasture/savannah type habitat, wetland restoration, and regenerative grazing It’s going to be EPIC

We don’t feed any bought feed to ewes now - so we really have to make sure they get some decent forage Today we pushed em on to the stockpile we saved from last summer

These cows become superheroes from here on in to winter Live on winter stockpile grazing only, and this morning mobs of meadow pipits were feeding all around them

I know a butcher really well… he tells me that ever time they put a stupid programme on TV saying eat less meat their sales go up UP not DOWN People aren’t having this at all - attempts to pin climate change on cows are frankly nonsensical

And the prize for worst delivery driver ever goes to this chap He was already a mile up a rough lane when he decided to go across the fields Confident chap Didn’t seem at all embarrassed Sat Nav said, and he did

Matterdale Serengeti Love this piece of land. It belongs to some friends, and we work together on nature restoration and grazing ecology. That oak wood pasture is gonna come down to the cows in the future.

Cows going after the plantain first - there is now amazing science that shows that grazing animals are geniuses at selecting the diet they need and want… present them with diversity and they find it and are healthier

First lamb of the season

I’m going to buy a cow luv… One cow? Yeh, just one cow Are you sure? Yeh, trust me How many cows have we got? A few How many? Erm

Belties might just be the most functionally effective breed in Britain This year’s calving: 100% unassisted births 100% live/healthy calves 100% good mothers 0 meds/drugs 0 bought feed 0 housed 0 losses It’s been like this pretty much every year - they are awesome cattle

Two thirds of our farm is now without water… something that generally only ever happens for a week or two in mid summer

There is no work half as good as fell gathering in the sunshine with your community

Constant movement and modest frame sized cows (and tomorrow maybe a back fence) are how we avoid poaching in winter - not magically drier land Two days on these cells and it would be soup - modest sized cows and good deep covers are keeping us on top

There is a thing in functional cattle breeding of the best cow being the one you never notice/help/prop up This cow, Holly, is that cow for us She wouldn’t win a show but I’d love to have a thousand like her for the business

Continued my grazing ecology education today at the Bison National Reserve in Montana Yep I’m a super nerd on grazing Wanted to see the plant community and grazing effect of bison

Sometimes we have to help a weak lamb get suckled - so we catch mum, turn her on her bum and attach lamb until full This lamb was very helpful and played its part in surviving
