"Yeah, because what happens, like in anything else in sport and in life, when you've done well for, what, 15, 16 games and he gets it. The key for any of us, in terms of, I don't care if it's when you're with your children or marriage, it's being consistent. It's doing it for years and years and years. That's what makes the top managers and players. You keep doing it. So as soon as he got the job, you're like, I know we've had a bit of fun here, and listen, just knew it wasn't going to work. You just knew it because your backup, you go, what's he got? We're talking about other managers. You go Eddie Howe, whatever, good or bad, whatever you might think, you go there's a bit of a CV behind him. He's won a trophy, Champions League, he's managed in the Premier League six, seven hundred games. There's experience there. With Carrick, you go, he's been in the Championship. Well, he knows the place, he loves the club. People going about his personality, this is nothing to do with his personality. Wayne Rooney says Manchester United's decline started when the club prioritised commercial deals over football. Rooney: "I think after Cristiano Ronaldo left and Carlos Tevez left, I started looking at the direction of the club. I remember Gary bringing something up before he left about how things were changing commercially, and it made me think about what was happening with the team as well. The club offered me a new five-year contract, but we'd just sold Tevez, we just sold Ronaldo. I said to the manager it was no disrespect to Phil Jones or Chris Smalling, but they weren't replacing Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez. I didn't want another transition. I didn't feel I had time for that in my career, so I had to ask the question, were we going to compete for trophies straight away or was this going to be another three or four-year rebuild? Gary: "I also remember standing in front of the dressing room telling the lads that if we didn't stand together, we'd regret it because in five or six years the players coming in would end up doing commercial appearances all week.
