The second that makes Miley’s Heart of Glass cover is not the first chorus. It is the last one. She has already sung “heart of glass” straight. Then she swaps it for “pain in the ass” and rips it with that dirty rasp. Blondie’s original is sleek disco. Cool. Glassy. A little untouchable. Miley’s 2020 iHeart Festival version puts a crack in it on purpose. By then this is Plastic Hearts Miley, not a former Disney kid trying on a leather jacket for a weekend. Same melody. Different blood. Disco polish with a glam-rock smirk. I do not think a great cover is about protecting the original. It is about having the nerve to leave your fingerprints on it. Crazy that this wasn’t written for guitar. Albéniz composed Asturias for piano. A keyboard trying to impersonate flamenco. Then the transcription happened, and the piece started breathing differently — tighter attack, more dirt in the rhythm, more air in the quiet. This little stretch is why the guitar version won.
