A video asking Georgia Muslims for their “Georgia Muslim hot take” repeatedly comes back to the same subject: Political organization and voter turnout. Listen carefully: 🗳️ “We like to talk a big game on the WhatsApp groups, but we don’t show up to the polls.” 🗳️ “We have way too many Muslims to be this disorganized.” 🗳️ “We need to get out of the Yemeni coffee shops and get to the polls.” 🗳️ “I think door-knocking is more effective than phone banking.” Then another participant identifies herself with Faith in Public Life and talks about holding more interfaith events. The exchange ends with: “Faith x GMVP, coming soon?” So I started following the organizations. GMVP is the Georgia Muslim Voter Project. According to its own website, GAMVP says its mission is to elevate the Muslim voice through “civic engagement and voter registration.” Its activities include voter registration, turnout efforts, legislative advocacy, mosque outreach and leadership development. The organization claims: ➡️ 100,000 people engaged ➡️ 3,000+ voters registered ➡️ 50+ mosques connected It also specifically describes its strategy as Integrated Voter Engagement. And this isn’t a shoestring operation. According to its latest publicly available IRS filing, the Georgia Muslim Voter Project reported approximately: 💰 $1.13 MILLION in 2024 revenue 💰 $1.03 MILLION in expenses 💰 $1.91 MILLION in net assets Its executive director is Shafina Khabani. Now follow the funding. Publicly reported grants to GAMVP in 2024 included: 🔹 Tides Foundation — $230,000 🔹 Pillars Fund — $125,000 🔹 Cedar Tree Foundation — $125,000 🔹 NEO Philanthropy — $125,000 🔹 Proteus Fund — $115,000 🔹 ProGeorgia State Table — $102,000 🔹 Alliance for Youth Organizing — $50,000 🔹 Black Voters Matter Capacity Building Institute — $50,000 Public IRS-derived grant data indicates GAMVP received approximately $5.5 million through 77 grants from 33 funders between 2020 and 2024, with Tides Foundation listed as its largest funder during that period. Then there is Faith in Public Life. Faith in Public Life describes itself as a national network of faith leaders working to influence public policy and says its Georgia operation works to “amplify faith voices on issues of public policy.” Its funding network is substantial as well. Public IRS-derived records show approximately $15.7 million in grants to Faith in Public Life from 2018–2024, including money attributed to: 🔹 National Philanthropic Trust 🔹 Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors 🔹 Ford Foundation 🔹 Democracy Fund 🔹 Carnegie Corporation of New York 🔹 New Venture Fund 🔹 Foundation to Promote Open Society 🔹 NEO Philanthropy And these aren’t organizations operating in completely separate universes. Faith in Public Life and Georgia Muslim Voter Project have already partnered, jointly hosting a Gwinnett “Community & Candidates” Meet & Greet on May 2, 2026, with candidates from multiple Georgia House and Senate districts and local school-board races. Both Faith in Public Life and Georgia Muslim Voter Project also appear among the Georgia Alliance coalition’s organizing partners. If you want to understand how Islamic political power is being built in Georgia, this is exactly the kind of infrastructure worth studying, millions moving through an interconnected network of nonprofit organizations and foundations. So when someone says: “We have way too many Muslims to be this disorganized.” …and another says: “We need to get out of the Yemeni coffee shops and get to the polls.” I pay attention. You should too. Not because people shouldn’t participate politically—I pay attention because organized political infrastructure matters.
