Live by the Rules, Die by the Rules I began to distrust the system at a young age. My mother worked two, sometimes three, jobs with no government assistance, yet we struggled constantly. Meanwhile, friends whose parents hadn’t worked in decades relied entirely on government programs and lived dramatically better than we did. Seeing that contrast firsthand infuriated me and made me deeply skeptical of how the system was designed and enforced. Years later, when Mitt Romney was criticized for his “47 percent” comments, I understood exactly what he meant, because I had personally witnessed the blatant abuse of the system. What we are seeing with recent cases of daycare fraud in Minnesota is merely a drop in the ocean of systemic abuse, I come from the bottom of American society and know firsthand how easily the system can be manipulated, rewarding those who exploit it rather than those who work tirelessly to survive.
