“We don’t need to see you here anymore. They’re all dead.” A grieving relative of detainees in #Assad’s slaughterhouses lashes out at the #UN delegation over their failure to save over 150,000 forcibly disappeared Syrians. Her pain reflects the devastation and disappointment.

In Damascus 📹, the ideological reshaping of power has gone hand in hand with a visible tightening of male domination and an intensified drive to control women’s lives. Many women describe a growing sense of insecurity. Moving around, getting dressed, or simply existing in public space has become an act under surveillance. Even before Assad’s fall, Syria was far from a model for women’s rights. But the new reality, marked by legal ambiguity and a total absence of safeguards, has pushed their basic freedoms even further back. The fear is constant: being stopped (or worse) because of a so-called “provocative” outfit or behavior deemed “improper” is now a daily threat. This is what we documented in our latest report for ARTE, by listening to those who, despite fear and threats, continue to resist the moral order imposed in the streets of the capital.

After several calls from the Syrian Interim Government, people have begun returning items taken from gov departments when #Damascus fell. Citizens are dropping them back at Kafr Sousa Square. This kind of awareness is needed more than anything else as #Syria rebuilds 💚

Still, despite the limited and conflicting statements from the new emerging Syrian authorities, the demand from the street is clear and will not be abandoned: Syria is gonna be a state with civilian rule, and what brought down Assad was a 13-year revolution, not just battles.

Frankly, I feel ashamed publishing this report on a subject journalists have ethically damaged by exploiting detainees for dramatic shots. I hope our ARTE piece this evening reflects balance, preserving the dignity of those tortured without pushing them into more pain.
