This is from 2021. Maaaaaybe Mamdani has chilled out a bit? Maybe we can chalk it up to youthful zeal? But I lean towards giving him more credit than that. I just don’t think there’s a strong case him drastically shifting on his goals. He is obviously a calculated and thoughtful guy and is extremely savvy when it comes to redirecting questions that press him on his specific views. He’s a bit of a charmer and I respect his game on that front tbf. Political messaging and discipline is a skill that not everyone has, and he’s in the upper tier on that front. But he’s never actually walked back rhetoric like what he said in this video. He just flashes that smile and finds a way to move on. As long as he governs competently and pragmatically, whatever. But him elevating DAC and pushing her over the finish line definitely caught my attention. Espaillat was the (largely progressive) incumbent, and Mamdani chose to back someone who just a few years ago was presenting as a Marxist-Leninist or someone sympathetic to that bend. She has not ever specifically walked back most of the rhetoric. She avoids specifics. Instead she says she’s not a communist and makes vague allusions to growing since then, which is a convenient dodge because since when was being a communist the main issue? All that to say, I don’t think it’s accurate to say that Mamdani’s goal is social democracy. And if the DSA and its supporters want more power within the Democratic Party, we should be honest about what they are actually trying to accomplish, and that it goes so far beyond a few populist policy goals. Opinions about those goals is a separate debate. I just want people to accurately describe that movement and stop with the ridiculous “we just want to give people health care” meme.

Can somebody smarter than me fact check this? I looked and I have no idea what Hasan is talking about. He claims that Jewish people who were forced out of the neighboring Arab states & had their assets seized following the 48 war were offered restitution and a right of return.

When we spoke on stream, you 1) literally didn’t know the meaning of the word “civics,” 2) implied MLK Jr was a racist, 3) thought segregation and fascism were the same thing, and 4) thought that not wanting to share a political coalition with Nazis would qualify as segregation.
