Watching today’s match and seeing the crowd reaction to Novak really made me think back to 2022. It was an absolutely insane time, Djokovic was detained in a hellhole in Australia and none of us knew whether he would be allowed to play - or freed from that room. My daughter Tara who was 7, decided to make him a poster with the message “Stay strong and fight”… She even drew him a “duck in a pond and some grass” because she knew he wasn’t allowed outside despite loving nature 😭 And she ends the video with “Hope your case goes right on Monday” (referring to his court case … ⚖️ When Novak came to Wimbledon that year, I queued up with the poster as I wanted to get it signed by him. There were a lot of papers thrust in front of him by others, but I remember him seeing the poster and then looking up to ask “Hey, how are you?” I was a bit taken aback as it felt like he recognised it… maybe he did or maybe he didn’t… but he has that special gift of making you feel so special with the warmth he exudes. I didn’t say much… I was in too much shock! ⚡️ Anyway, of course he signed it and til today, Tara cherishes the poster… Novak: a special champion and a special person.
