Today, standing in Parliament to speak as the Hillsborough Law passed was one of the proudest and most emotional moments of my life. For the 97. For their families. Yesterday, I was so proud to see Liverpool at its very best as taxi drivers from across our city and beyond came together to give more than 250 children in care an unforgettable day out at Southport Pleasureland. Seeing the cabs, brilliantly dressed for the occasion, set off from my constituency was a reminder of the incredible generosity and spirit that defines our city. A huge thank you to Bernie Buxton, who founded this remarkable event 43 years ago, and to his army of volunteers who make it all possible. Today I asked the Government why taxpayers are subsidising poverty pay. The DWP says 1.2 million people are working full-time but still rely on Universal Credit because their wages are too low. I asked whether large employers will be required to report how many of their workers need Universal Credit. Work should pay enough to live on. No one working full time should go hungry. #RightToFoodCommission #EndPovertyPay

Last night I called out the myth that immigrants are to blame for the UK’s housing crisis. 1946 – 1981 in the UK we built 5 Million council houses. Since 1981 we have built 250,000. In Liverpool a council house has not been built for 36 years! Blame Thatcher, not immigrants.

Today I reintroduced the Hillsborough Law to Parliament. The Prime Minister promised enacting this legislation would be one of his first acts in office. A year on, he still hasn’t done it. I’m showing him that it’s here and ready to go. It just needs political will.

There is a toxic narrative around who is and is not worthy to live on these isles. Recently my brother had our DNA tested: We are 65% Irish, 25% Scottish 9% Welsh and 1% Danish – and zero % percent English. Scouse not English, you might say. Yet I am fiercely proud to come from these Isles and my great city of Liverpool with its melting pot of cultures built on immigration. That is how I define patriotism. Not by race or religion - which is a road I fear many are taking right now in a race to the bottom with Trump’s America.

Last night I welcomed the Hillsborough Law carry-over motion, which means we can keep the fight for the Hillsborough Law alive in Parliament. But it shouldn’t have come to this. Two anniversaries, a full Parliamentary session but still no Hillsborough law - it’s not good enough. Yesterday I spoke in the Westminster Hall debate, secured by my good friend Richard Burgon MP, on banning second jobs for MPs. Being an MP isn’t a side hustle. It’s a public duty. Our constituents expect and deserve representatives whose only priority is serving their communities, not chasing private interests or boosting their own bank balance.
