Simon Deng was nine years old when he was taken from his village in southern Sudan and handed to a family up north as a gift, and he stayed with them for about three years, working without pay and sleeping where the animals slept while nobody once used his name. Nobody came looking for him either, so eventually he got himself out and made his own way home to a family who had never stopped searching.
