Yesterday, alongside my fellow nominees to the ncc.gov.ng Board, I was screened by the Senate Committee on Communications, chaired by Senator Ikra Bilbis. I thank the Almighty Allah for guidance and grace. I am grateful to the Senators and House of Representative members for a rigorous session and to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the trust and responsibility. The Committee made its expectations clear. Nigerians deserve quality service and universal coverage. We understand the assignment and, upon confirmation and resumption, we are committed to delivering to the best of our collective abilities. So help us God. My heartfelt thanks to Distinguished Senator Tokunbo Abiru for his kind attestations to my character and competence. Special appreciation to my wife, children, parents, sisters, brothers, and dear friends who attended the screening with me, and to all who came from far and wide in solidarity. I also appreciate Mr. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Honourable Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, for being on hand to offer their very warm congratulations. Our focus is clear. Deepen broadband. Expand inclusion. Protect consumers. Strengthen competition. Improve quality of service. I look forward to working with the Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida Dr. Aminu Maida, my fellow Board members, the Commissioners, and the management and staff of the Commission to crowd in investment that powers jobs and growth, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda. This afternoon, I visited my predecessor, Prof. Adeolu Akande in Abuja, reinforcing the ncc.gov.ng’s commitment to institutional stability and progress. The meeting provided an opportunity for constructive engagement, knowledge sharing, and reflection on the Commission’s journey, as well as its future direction in Nigeria’s evolving communications landscape. I also emphasized the importance of building on existing foundations while driving innovation and excellence in regulatory oversight. Prof. Adeolu Akande also noted that sustained progress within the Commission is anchored on continuity, institutional memory, and collaborative leadership. This visit shows the NCC’s commitment to stability, good governance, and the seamless transition of leadership in advancing its mandate.

Yesterday, alongside the Executive Commissioner, Technical Services, Engr. Abraham Oshadame, and staff of the ncc.gov.ng, Lagos Zonal Office, I received a delegation of stakeholders from Nigeria’s creative industry — filmmakers, musicians, facilitators, investors, and others — on a courtesy visit. The engagement offered an opportunity for open and constructive conversation around the intersection of telecommunications and the creative economy, particularly on issues of online safety, service quality, data usage, intellectual property protection, and digital monetisation. Having worked closely within the creative ecosystem over the last decade, I understand both the opportunities and the challenges that come with building, protecting, and scaling creative value in a digital environment. Nigeria’s creative industry continues to play a significant role in shaping culture, driving economic value, and projecting our global relevance. As a Commission, we recognise the importance of fostering an environment where innovation is supported, content is protected, and creators are empowered to thrive within a fair and sustainable digital ecosystem. Much was said, and we agreed that much remains to be done. We left with a shared commitment to work together in a meaningful and mutually beneficial way — to grow both industries, beginning with the convening of a stakeholders’ meeting with our operators — and to protect our critical national infrastructure, promote safe and responsible digital use, and positively project our country as best as possible. As part of my oversight responsibilities as Chairman of the Board of ncc.gov.ng, I led a working inspection of key mobile network operators, accompanied by Dr. Aminu Maida, Board Member NCC, Princess Nere Emiko and Engr. Adebayo, Chairman ALTON. Our visits to MTN, Glo, Airtel, and the Open Access Data Centre, Lekki, provided valuable first-hand insight into industry operations and the critical infrastructure underpinning telecommunications services in Nigeria. This engagement reflects the broader vision of Bola Ahmed Tinubu President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, which places digital connectivity at the heart of Nigeria's economic transformation. Ensuring that Nigerians, regardless of where they live, can access reliable, high-quality network services is not a luxury; it is a foundation for the inclusive growth this administration is committed to delivering. Our work at the NCC Board directly supports that goal by strengthening regulatory effectiveness, holding operators to the highest standards, and driving meaningful improvements in service delivery across the country.

Dear Idris, I pray for your success in this new role. May Allah grant you wisdom, knowledge, energy, and the right people for this journey. May this usher in the NCC’s best era. Amin. My gratitude to the Senate for a fair and rigorous confirmation process, and to my darling wife, Abisoye BIO, our daughters, my parents, friends, and family for their unwavering support. It was a moment of profound reflection and gratitude to lead the Board of the ncc.gov.ng on a courtesy visit to the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu last Thursday. As I mentioned during our meeting, my "PhD in Public Service" was obtained within the The Lagos State Govt ecosystem. To return now, in this federal capacity, and be received so warmly by a leader who was once my "Dean" in that school of service, is truly humbling. Our discussions reinforced the central role Lagos continues to play as Nigeria’s hub for telecommunications, innovation, and the digital economy, a position built over decades of deliberate governance and reform. This legacy, championed and consolidated under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Bola Ahmed Tinubu continues to shape Lagos as the template for national progress. The NCC remains committed to deepening collaboration with Lagos State to ensure that the infrastructure powering our nation’s economic engine remains resilient, compliant, and future-ready. Thank you, Mr. Governor, for the commendation and for reminding us that while we serve the nation, we must never forget the soil that nurtured our capacity to serve.

This afternoon at the ncc.gov.ng HQ in Abuja, I received Mr. Bukola Olopade, Director General of the National Sports Commission, and his team on a courtesy call. Our last formal conversation in our previous roles — him as CEO of Nilayo Sports, and me as GCE of The Temple Company — was no different from this one: “How do we elevate sports in Nigeria?” Today’s overarching subject was the same. The only difference was our current roles. We discussed the intersection of sports and technology, particularly the development of a robust Sports Information Management System, the role of modern data centres in esports, and the immense economic value embedded within the sports ecosystem. We also explored the importance of intentional investment in sports as a tool for national development, job creation, and youth engagement. As Chairman of the NCC, I reaffirmed my commitment to strategic collaboration — leveraging connectivity, innovation, and infrastructure to unlock opportunities that will benefit Nigerians across sectors.

This morning in Abuja, I had the honour of being inaugurated as the Vice-Chairman of the Universal Service Provision Fund Universal Service Provision Fund under the leadership of the Honourable Minister, who serves as Chairman of the Fund, Dr. 'Bosun Tijani. The USPF plays a critical role in advancing inclusive connectivity by facilitating access to telecommunications services in unserved and underserved communities across the country; bridging the digital divide, empowering rural populations, and supporting socio-economic development through ICT. As I assume this responsibility, I remain committed to supporting the Fund’s mandate of expanding digital access, strengthening infrastructure, and ensuring that no Nigerian is left behind in our journey towards a fully connected nation.

Yesterday, I received ALTON on a courtesy visit at the ncc.gov.ng. I appreciate Engineer Gbenga Adebayo and his team for the engagement and for reaffirming ALTON’s support for a stronger, more stable telecoms sector. I also want to acknowledge EVC, Dr. Aminu Maida, and the NCC management team for the steady institutional work that keeps the Commission effective and trusted, especially the consistency and professionalism that industry stakeholders continue to reference when they speak about the NCC’s independence and credibility. Beyond sector collaboration, I used the opportunity to issue a clear call to action: ALTON should prioritise the zero-rating of educational websites to expand access to learning resources nationwide. This is a practical, near-term intervention that can unlock opportunity for students and educators across Nigeria, especially in underserved communities where data costs can determine whether learning happens at all. It aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly the commitment to inclusive, quality education and ensuring no child is left behind in the digital age. In their response, ALTON welcomed the focus on practical interventions that translate connectivity into measurable national impact. They also reiterated their expectation that the NCC continues to operate with independence and fairness, and they acknowledged that this administration has helped move the sector forward by addressing long-standing legacy issues affecting operators. ALTON expressed readiness to sustain engagement with the Commission as we work through shared priorities. As NCC Chairman, I remain committed to fairness, transparency, and a level playing field for all operators, while pushing for initiatives that convert connectivity into real social and economic outcomes. I look forward to continued collaboration with ALTON and all stakeholders to strengthen quality of service and widen meaningful access.
