Shuttered rest stops in Illinois. It’s emblematic of the way our politicians treat us. On my way down to Effingham and Mattoon on I-57, two of the four rest stops were closed. On the way back north, three of the four were closed. The last one, Prairie View, has been closed for years. We pay the nation’s highest property taxes. The nation’s 2nd-highest gas taxes. It's not just property taxes, sales taxes and gasoline taxes. Embedded in your electricity bill is another tax – in the form of a surcharge – this time for green energy subsidies. Nearly $600 million will be extracted from Illinoisans this year alone. Solar farm developers are big beneficiaries of those subsidies. Just 13% of black 4th-grade CPS students read at grade level. It’s just 19% for Latino children. Despite spending $32,000 per kid. We can fund all the Head Start programs we want, but if we can't figure out literacy in our schools, we are simply wasting money. Here’s what needs to happen: Roll back the CTU’s powers. No more strikes. Limit bargaining to salaries only. Make labor negotiations public. Bring back phonics with a vengeance. End social promotion – kids can’t move to fourth grade if they’re not at grade level. Close the near-empty schools where kids have no chance at an education. Opt-in to the federal tax credit scholarship program. Above all, introduce Universal School Choice – Educational Savings Programs for all children. #twill IL Republican Party WTTW - Chicago PBS

The small town of Bartelso, in Clinton County, has one of the best performing school districts in Illinois. Today, nearly 75% of students read at grade level, spending just $8,700 per student. It was even better before Pritzker's school shutdowns. In 2019, 85% of kids were at grade level. Cost per student then, less than $8,000. As your governor, if we can replicate just some of what they're doing in Bartelso, education in Illinois will be far better off. Keep going, Bartelso! Illinois' Katie Abraham was killed by an illegal immigrant charged with DUI in a hit and run. Her father, Joe Abraham, hasn't heard once from Governor JB Pritzker. I talked about that in a presser yesterday at the Broadview ICE facility. We need to end the state's Sanctuary Status. Pritzker needs to stop fomenting violence.
