Ever heard of a Marston Mat runway? Also know as PSP (pierced steel planking), this clever interlocking system was devised just before WWII for rapid construction of runways in remote locations. So cool to get to land on one still in use here in Papua 🌴✈️

🧈 When you butter the landing 👌🏻 Bush flying is all about getting the job done but if you can grease the landing too 👨🏻🍳😘

⛔️Dropping into the point of no return⚠️ Many airstrips in Papua are like this where you fly into a small bowl, surrounded by terrain the aircraft cannot out climb. From here on in, you MUST land. A go-around will only result into a crash into terrain 💥

🥳 First ever aeroplane to land at this airstrip 🙌🏻 Occasionally, I had the privilege of being tasked to make a first landing. This is Trison where the local villagers had spent many years constructing an airstrip by hand. Note the big crowd all dancing as I turn around 💃

Barely kept it straight after landing on this crazy rough airstrip 😬

Far beyond the committal height with a heavily loaded aircraft, the only choice from here is to land. A go-around would be fatal ☠️

Cloud break procedure: Porter style 😎 It’s pretty common to arrive overhead an airstrip into find it overcast with cloud. Using beta pitch on the propeller and a slow airspeed allows the Porter to drop down through the tiniest of holes safely into the valley below 🤙🏻

🦘Bounced landing🫨 It doesn’t happen very often but if it does, it’s important to keep a cool head and ride it out on short, steep airstrips like these in Papua. Note how I don’t move the control stick or change the power after the initial touchdown. Anyone know why I bounced?

⚠️Fully committed approach‼️ It’s common in mountain flying to have to commit to a landing much further away from the airstrip than in open ground. This is due to the rising terrain surrounding some airstrips that you cannot out climb and so you must make the landing 👊🏻

More right rudder! ➡️ When departing wet, slippery airstrips the Porter can require a lot of right rudder. There’s often a few seconds after adding takeoff power where you need to dab the right brake before the rudder has enough airflow to be effective.

🤠Please ignore the crashed aircraft on the left after landing 🙈 Oh and the other wrecked aircraft at the top of the airstrip 🫣

Don’t hit the trees! Don’t hit the trees! Don’t hit the trees! 🌴🛬

Wait for the end to see how steep this landing was 😎 Uphill landings are commonplace in Papua and require specialist piloting skills to master. Once you have the hang of it though, they’re easier and safer than landing on the flat, slippery airstrips of the flatlands 🌴
