Sometimes the most effective strategy in nature is doing absolutely nothing. American alligators like this one can spend hours barely moving at all. Staying still helps them conserve energy, regulate body temperature, and wait patiently for prey to come within snapping distance.

You might want to turn your volume up for this one. That's the unmistakable bellow of an American alligator. During the breeding season, male alligators produce these deep, booming calls to announce their presence, attract females, and let rivals know who's occupying the territory. Hello, world! Meet female and male mountain lion kittens P-116 and P-117, born in the Santa Susana Mountains this spring. The kittens were found by Santa Monica Mtns biologists in P-106’s (mom’s) den when the kittens were about 24 days old. Video by NPS
