₹2 buys a stranger's home address. We tested a Play Store app with 10M+ downloads selling VAHAN/eChallan data, one number plate gave us the owner's full name, father's name, permanent address, insurance policy, chassis and engine numbers, all of which Parivahan masks behind an OTP. This isn't a hack. Researchers at Cyderes traced it to licensed API keys given to KYC companies, now resold on Telegram. Your number plate can reveal your full name, address and insurance details to anyone with ₹29 and an app. Our RTIs found that NIC issued 25,000+ private credentials to query VAHAN and eChallan since January 2024, leading to 17 million private lookups. On October 1, private data sharing was quietly switched off with no public notice. Meanwhile, the logs that could prove misuse are set to expire. Delhi Police has spent ₹15.66 crore on AI-linked CCTV with no law and no SOP behind it. That means protesters get tracked and innocent people get misidentified. Of the 3,000 people these cameras “identified,” 20 were already in jail. Protest is a right. Surveillance without limits is digital authoritarianism.

Five days after Jantar Mantar protests ended, Delhi Police tendered ₹15.6 crore for 338 cameras with facial recognition and microphones, including at Ramlila Maidan. On Oct 11, protests were moved there. We have no evidence the two decisions were coordinated. Before you upload your selfie to Har Ghar Tiranga this Independence Day, know the risks. Your photo goes into a public gallery, visible to anyone against your name, alongside a certificate. To upload it, you hand over your mobile number & OTP, on a site reportedly built by a private company and hosted on AWS, with a privacy policy that falls seriously short. The state gets goodwill. He was having coffee, alone. A stranger's smart glasses recorded him without consent, and the clip became a reel with lakhs of views. Ray-Ban Meta glasses are designed to look like ordinary eyewear, so you'd never know you're being filmed. When our client complained, Meta said it didn't violate community standards. We've sent legal notices to the creator and to Meta. Covert surveillance isn't a design flaw, it's the product.

Defending the Constitution is the highest patriotism. In 2017, the Supreme Court made privacy a fundamental right, even in public. Yet Delhi Police is running live facial recognition on peaceful protesters, with no legal basis. This is unconstitutional mass surveillance. Your Instagram photos may now be training someone else’s AI. Meta has enabled its new Muse AI image generator for users by default. It allows people to generate AI images of you by using your public Instagram handle, with no notification when your photos are used and no way to remove images created before you opt out. To opt out: Profile → Menu → Sharing and reuse → Turn off the reuse options under “Allow people to reuse your content on Instagram and with AI features at Meta.”
