Celebrating 30 Years of Pinkerton! Two years after the triple-platinum success of their 1994 debut album, Weezer made a bold hard right with Pinkerton, the story of what frontman Rivers Cuomo called “two very weird years” of his life. The lyrics, lifted directly from Cuomo’s journals and dissecting confessional tales of lust, intimacy and loneliness, explore what he called his “dark side – all the parts of myself that I was either afraid or embarrassed to think about before.” Yet musically, it remains some of the group’s most adventurous work. “What you get,” Rolling Stone wrote upon its release, “is true to the sun-‘n’-fun aesthetic of great jangly pop ... ![The IVC deluxe 2LP pressing of ‘Swan Songs’ by Hollywood Undead features seven bonus tracks and is pressed on two-color “Swan Songs” Galaxy Vinyl. Limited to 3,000 individually numbered copies, it’s the first ever pressing coming in a gatefold jacket. The packaging is matte printed with a chrome HU logo, and includes a bonus two-sided HU turntable slip mat. Armed with mysterious personas, party-rap lyrics and an aggressive, exuberant fusion of hip-hop, hard rock, and pop, Hollywood Undead exploded from MySpace darlings to bona fide stars. On their 2008 debut, the group enlisted production help from Danny Lohner (Nine Inch Nails) and Don Gilmore (Linkin Park) to create an album that, to quote The Punk Site, “swaggers through your speakers in [a] self-confident, cocky way.” Album opener “Undead” interpolates and upends the riff from Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train” to set the scene for the rest of the album. The mid-1990s saw no shortage of era-defining British rock bands that sneered and jangled their way through America. Inspired by their favorite punk and New Wave bands, Elastica burned quickly yet brightly, becoming an MTV staple in 1995 with their self-titled debut. While the lead single “Connection", with its indelible guitar riff and earworm vocal melody, remains an album highlight, it’s one of many hook-laden tracks that makes the album a defining monument of the Britpop era. “Ultimately, everything we do is always going to be defined by our [punk-pop] aesthetic,” perpetually cool frontwoman Justine Frischmann told Rolling Stone in 1996.
