🚨 On Wednesday, Israeli settlers seized the home of the Palestinian Basha family in the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City after Israeli courts ordered their eviction. The family, which consists of six households, most of whom are elderly, have lived in the building since the 1930s. Their eviction followed legal proceedings initiated by the General Custodian, a governmental body within the Israeli Ministry of Justice. In a video circulating online, Rabbi Avishai Zruya, head of the Yeshivat Ateret Yerushalayim settler organization, is seen leading settlers in a prayer and affixing to the building’s entrance a mezuzah—a Jewish ritual object traditionally placed on a doorpost, symbolically marking the newly seized building as a Jewish space. He declares: “Today, on the eve of Tisha B’Av… we come here with dignity and splendor, in the fullness of our Jewishness and faith.” Tisha B’Av is a Jewish day of mourning commemorating the destruction of the Jewish Temples. Ateret Yerushalayim is closely connected to the Ateret Cohanim settler organization, which plays a central role in the forced eviction of Palestinians and settler takeover of their homes in the Old City and surrounding Palestinian neighborhoods, including Silwan. This is what settler violence looks like in East Jerusalem: no need for settler pogroms or rampages, instead, discriminatory laws, state institutions, courts, and police are all utilized to forcibly remove Palestinians from their homes and seize them for Jewish settlement—all under the veneer of legality. Israeli law allows Jews to reclaim property allegedly owned before 1948, while denying Palestinians the same right to recover property they lost in West Jerusalem and elsewhere.

🚨 Today, representatives of the Israeli settler organization Elad removed a fence separating the courtyard of the Palestinian Shaabani family from the City of David compound, which surrounds the family’s home in Wadi Hilweh neighborhood in Silwan, East Jerusalem. When family member Samir Shaabani went to the police to file a complaint, Elad representatives returned, placed a bench and a sign in the courtyard, and effectively took control of part of the family’s property. The Shaabani family is one of only three Palestinian families remaining in the area where the City of David visitor center was established. The City of David compound, branded as an archaeological and tourist site, is located in the heart of the Palestinian neighborhood of Silwan. It is operated by Elad, a private settler organization that has made Silwan the center of its settlement activity. Through archaeological excavations, tourism projects, and the takeover of Palestinian property, Elad works with extensive state backing to deepen Israeli control over the Old City Basin, expand the settler presence, and impose an exclusively Jewish narrative on the area. Elad is now seeking to further expand the compound and displace the remaining Palestinian families in the area of the City of David through the Absentee Property Law, a discriminatory legal mechanism repeatedly used to transfer Palestinian property in East Jerusalem to Israeli settler organizations.

🚨 At dawn today, around 100 Palestinian residents of a multi-story residential building in Wadi Qaddum, Silwan woke to bulldozers, heavy machinery, and a large presence of polices forces surrounding their homes. Within hours, Israeli forces and Jerusalem municipal crews razed the building’s 13 apartments, leaving dozens of families including children and elderly members without shelter. Municipal crews were accompanied by what appeared to be violent mobs of Israeli youth—wearing official yellow vests and presented as part of the operation—who assaulted residents and hurled stones at families attempting to remain near their homes. The demolition was carried out despite a meeting scheduled for today between the residents’ legal counsel and the Jerusalem Municipality to continue negotiations concerning the building’s status. This is the largest residential demolition carried out in East Jerusalem in 2025 and yet another example of the wider policy of forced displacement targeting Palestinians in East Jerusalem. Today, Umm Nasser Rajabi and her family were forcibly evicted from their home of over 50 years in Batan al-Hawa, Silwan, as a result of lawsuits filed by the Israeli settler organization Ateret Cohanim, which works to advance the takeover of Palestinian homes through discriminatory Israeli laws. With this eviction, the number of Palestinian families who have lost their homes to settlers in Batan al-Hawa in less than 15 months rises to 12 families, as part of a systematic campaign aimed at displacing Palestinian residents. Hundreds of more residents from Batan Al-Hawa face the same fate as the Rajabi Family as Ateret Cohanim and the state intensify their efforts against Palestinian families in the area.
