Ayatollah Khomeini- the founder of the Islamic revolution- fought the right wing clerics more than fight the West or even Shah. Yes. He did not believe that God came through perfect recitation of the Quran or through any of the outward aspects of prayer or religion. He was a mystic. He believed God was known through love. He founded the revolution on the idea of service to God through upholding human dignity - and THAT service being the fundamental tenant of anyone who submits to God- to uplift his brethren. That is why religion and politics (the affairs of the people) were connected. Here is his student and friend Ayatollah Beheshti, who was one of the founders of the revolution talking about love- the actual backbone of the founders. Yes. If you didn’t know- it’s because it was usurped/ not just by the West but also by fundamental elements in Islam - right winged clerics and clerics who wished to use the name of God for their own advancement- that sought to destroy this vision.
