The funeral in Belfast of Bobby Sands on the 7th of May 1981 attracted in excess of 100,000 people, mourners made the somber journey from all corners of Ireland to pay their solemn respects, the largest Republican funeral in Ireland since that of Terence MacSwiney in Cork in 1920

An estimated 5000 mourners turned out to pay their final repects to Óglach Tom McElwee, the cortege made the five mile journey from the McElwee family home in Tamlaghduff to Bellaghy where he was laid to rest alongside his cousin and fellow comrade Francis Hughes. (Aug 10th 1981)
