I have just landed in Panama City to begin a historic official visit to Panama and Costa Rica. This is the first-ever visit by an Israeli President to Panama, a nation that is a true friend and partner of the State of Israel. I look forward to meeting with my friend President José Raúl Mulino as we work to strengthen the deep and enduring ties between our nations. I also thank my friend Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha Vásquez for the warm welcome here this morning. In both Panama and Costa Rica, I will meet with the leadership and members of the local Jewish communities, which are a special bridge between our nations and peoples. This important visit demonstrates the renewed momentum in Israel’s ties with countries across Latin America to the benefit of both our regions.

I repeat and reiterate: Israel does not seek war. But we have the right and the duty to defend our people. Here’s just an example of the threat we face. This IDF video shows how Hezbollah stores and launches missiles in civilian areas and homes. Thousands and thousands of long range rockets are kept in houses, living rooms, bedrooms, and kitchens, and then launched with the sole intention of killing our people. Would you accept this in your or your neighbor’s home? What nation would accept its citizens living under such a threat from its neighbors?

On the stage of the World Economic Forum in Davos, we marked the first birthday of baby Kfir Bibas, who was brutally kidnapped from his home in Nir Oz and held, like his parents Shiri and Yarden, and his brother Ariel, in captivity by the terrorist organization Hamas. We will continue to demand from the whole world to be relentless in their efforts to secure the immediate release of Kfir, and all 136 hostages from the hands of the Hamas murderers.
