Almost a year ago, I was driving through the Idaho desert near INL when it finally clicked. America is attempting to do something never done before: restart an entire industry. For more than thirty years, we largely stopped building nuclear reactors. But, while most people weren't paying attention, a new generation quietly prepared for the day that might change. Then came May 2025. President Trump signed four executive orders designed to accelerate American nuclear. One of them set an extraordinary goal for three advanced reactor companies to go critical by July 4, 2026. Almost overnight, what had been simmering became a race. I found myself with a front-row seat. I realized I had something few people have… access. And with that access came a responsibility to document this story as it unfolds. Over the past eight months, our documentary crew has gone inside laboratories, construction sites, control rooms, government offices, and startup headquarters. We watched brilliant people wrestle with impossible engineering problems, politics, tight deadlines and tons of uncertainty. At first I thought we were making a documentary about nuclear, but I was wrong. Nuclear is just the lens. The real story is something much bigger. It's about whether America can still build big things. It's about people willing to devote years of their lives to projects they might never see through. Today, we're releasing a sneak peek into what will become The Last Renaissance. This is where it begins. Whether this nuclear renaissance succeeds or fails, historians will look back on this moment. Over the coming months and years, we'll continue giving you glimpses from inside this journey, bringing you along as one of the most ambitious industrial revivals in modern American history unfolds in real time. And when it all comes together, it will become a feature-length documentary. For now, we're still in it. History almost never feels historic while you're living through it. This time, we're making sure no side of the story goes untold.

Recently I’ve heard people say the U.S. should build small nuclear reactors, because “that’s what France did.” This comes from President Trump’s appearance on the Joe Rogan podcast. But it’s wrong. France had one of the most iconic builds of nuclear electricity ever, but they were not small reactors.

We believe that there’s no future without nuclear energy. We support the goal of tripling nuclear energy capacity by 2050 to get to net-zero emissions. However, we can’t achieve this goal without addressing these two things: 1 - 𝗔𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲-𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀: Over and over again we’ve witnessed a troubling pattern: when nuclear power plants are shut down, they’re replaced by fossil fuels. This transition not only makes governments more reliant on polluting energy imports, but also makes it lot harder to reduce our greenhouse gas emission. Given the urgency of the climate and energy crisis we face today, both of these outcomes are unacceptable. For these reasons we strongly condemn nuclear energy phase-outs and instead advocate for countries to extend the life of their existing nuclear reactors. By doing so, nations can decrease their dependence on fossil fuels, maintain a more sustainable energy mix, and make substantial progress towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions. 2 - 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁: The WorldBank extends grants for low and middle-income countries to fund various initiatives, including clean energy projects. The last time it approved a nuclear energy project was six decades ago. Since then, the World Bank and other multilateral development banks have completely stopped supporting nuclear power. Not only do they refuse to provide financial support, they also refrain from offering any strategic planning guidance to countries looking to build nuclear power plants. It’s a de facto ban on nuclear energy, since these projects tend to be expensive and beyond the means of low to middle-income countries. We urge the World Bank and other similar financing institutions to update their stance on this matter and hire the necessary staff to assess nuclear energy projects. Small modular reactors (SMRs) are the cool kid in the nuclear block. But, despite the hype, there are none commercially available in the US and a measly three in the world. Rep Carter is right. If we want to start building nuclear today, we need to build existing designs.

I haven’t seen many people commenting on this, but on his most recent podcast Elon Musk changed his tune on something very important. “As long as there’s intelligence, *ideally* which also includes human intelligence and consciousness propagated into the future, I think that’s a good thing.” Ideally. I’ve known Elon for almost a decade. He has consistently been pro-human and voiced concerns about AI. This change isn’t because he doesn’t care about humanity, it’s because he’s lost hope that we can steer this thing. Now the only chance we have is that AI deems us worthy of coming along for the ride.
